Until the 19th century [ Edit | Edit the source text ]

Elzach was first mentioned on August 5, 1178. From the 13th century it was subordinate to the Lords of Schwarzenberg, who awarded him the city rights around 1290. From the end of the 14th century, the rule of Schwarzenberg was regarded as the fief of the Habsburgs. In 1465 she went to the von Rechberg family, later to that of Ehingen (1546) and from Reischach (1560), whereby the new gentlemen mostly took their place of residence in the city palace Elzach. In 1567, Archduke Ferdinand von Austria bought the Schwarzenberg rule for 28,000 guilders. [3] However, the Habsburgs continued to award the rule as a fief to that of Fischer and Greuth. From 1742 to 1805 the barons of Wittenbach [4] The fief. The respective noble family belonged to the Breisgau land stands and the rule was part of Vorderösterreich, which belonged to the Austrian Reichskreis. From 1803 to 1806, Elzach was part of the short-lived duchy Modena-Breisgau. In 1806 the city came to the Electorate Baden with the front Austrian Breisgau, which soon became a Baden Grand Duchy. From 1813 to 1819 it was the seat of a Baden district office. [5]

Community merger [ Edit | Edit the source text ]

On January 1, 1974, the municipality of Katzenmoos was incorporated into Elzach, the community of Yach followed on July 1, 1974. Today’s city of Elzach was formed on January 1, 1975 by the association of the city of Elzach and the municipalities of Oberprechtal and Prechtal. [6] Oberprechtal only emerged on January 1, 1964 by separating nine living spaces from the municipality of Prechtal.

Districts [ Edit | Edit the source text ]

Yach [ Edit | Edit the source text ]

Yach (about 1000 inhabitants) is located at the foot of the Rohrhardsberg, in a side valley of the upper Elztal.
In Yach is that Siebenfelsen , A meter -high stone structure that apparently consists of seven stones on top of each other. His origin is unclear.

Yach is the only place in Germany, the name of which begins with the letter “Y”. The inhabitants of the Elztal express the name like “ëich”. There is therefore probably a name relative to the Eyachtal in the northern Black Forest.

Prechtal [ Edit | Edit the source text ]

For the history see also article rule prechtal
With approximately 2000 inhabitants, Prechtal is the most populated place after the core city of Elzach. Prechtal probably has its origin by the “broken” river course of the Elz, which makes a bend in the former district of Oberprechtal. Prechtal is characterized by a dense club network. There are various clubs for sports and leisure, with the RVC Prechtal particularly highlighted by participating in national championships in the youth area, as well as a team in the 2nd Bundesliga or one year in the 1st Bundesliga in club bike ball.

Prechtal is “praised” in a popular saying, so there is a saying: “In the praises everything is right.”

Oberprechtal [ Edit | Edit the source text ]

For the history see also article rule prechtal

Church of the Coronation in Oberprechtal

Oberprechtal has around 1070 inhabitants. Since the beginning of the 10th century, almost the entire Elztal has belonged to the Waldkirch monastery, a foundation of the Alemannen duke Burchard II in a protective letter, Pope Alexander III. In 1178 exhibited for the St. Margarethen monastery in Waldkirch, the Prechtal was first mentioned as a Meierstum “Bregen”.

In other documents of the Middle Ages, the place also occurs under the name Febrch, Brech, Brecht and Precht. The name cannot be explained precisely, but probably comes because the Elz, which is initially flowing north of today’s Oberprechtal, is clearly broken and the river is now continued in the southwestern direction.

Katzenmoos [ Edit | Edit the source text ]

The name appears in 1341 Kozzenmuos the first time. Mining was probably operated in the area. Pingen and old mining lands testify to this. In the 16th century the place will then be Pussy called. Until the municipal reform on January 1, 1974, Katzenmoos was an independent community. [6]

The great -grandfather of the Archbishop of Freiburg Stephan Burger comes from Katzenmoos, but left the place in 1896. [7]

City council [ Edit | Edit the source text ]

The local election on May 26, 2019 led to the following result with a turnout of 67.3% (2014: 57.4%): [8]

Smoke 43.8% 8 seats 2014: 45.6%, 8 seats
CDU 34.7% 6 seats 2014: 37.8%, 7 seats
SPD 21.5% 4 seats 2014: 16.7%, 3 seats

coat of arms [ Edit | Edit the source text ]

The blason of the Elzacher coat of arms is: “In split shield in front in green the St. Nikolaus in a silver robe with a red, silver -boarded mitra, the silver crook in the right, a red book with three golden balls on it, holding a floating black three -mountain in silver. ”

For the first time, the St. Nicholas city and church patron is used on a city seal hanging on a certificate of 1315. The Black Dreiberg in the coat of arms is due to the rule of Schwarzenberg. On the basis of the seal from 1315, the Generalandes Archive made a coat of arms for Elzach in 1895. A short time later, however, it turned out that the seal, as carefully it was stung and as clean it was kept, could never provide clear impressions because the coat of arms was overloaded and therefore did not allow an exact engraving.

Today’s coat of arms was simplified to today’s valid city coat of arms after the decision of the municipal council of Elzach and with a certificate from the Interior Ministry of Baden-Württemberg. The coat of arms are kept in such a way that according to the heraldic rule, the city colors assumed around 1948 can be derived “white-green” (silver-green). These colors of the rear coat of arms are taken from the coat of arms of the men of Schwarzenberg. [9]
