The ATocha train station (Official name according to Adif: Madrid Atocha Puerta ) is one of the two long -distance stations of Madrid. In contrast to the Nordbahnhof Chamartín, Atocha is located in the center of the city, at Plaza Emperador Carlos V, not far from the Botanical Garden and the Museo del Prado. In addition to the long-distance and high-speed trains from the south of Spain and the regional trains, all S-Bahn lines (Cercanías) in the region and line 1 of Metro Madrid hold in Atocha. Atocha is one of the most important traffic hubs of the 3.5 million inhabitants.

Atocha was created as a head station. The old station hall is famous for its large roof structure made of cast iron and glass, which was built between 1888 and 1892 in Art Nouveau by the architect Alberto de Palacio y Elissague from Basque Country. Since a new, significantly larger platform hall (architect José Rafael Moneo) was put into operation south of it, there is a tropical palm garden under the huge vault of the old station hall, which is used as a waiting hall and meeting point.

Today’s train station is made up of two parts: On the one hand, there is a headquarters built by the above -ground station, on which some long -distance trains of the high -speed train system AVE hold. [first] The other part is an underground passage station, to which three two-track tunnels are followed by the city to the north to the Chamartín train station and which is used by both regional and S-Bahn trains and by the AVE. [first] The medium and first completed tunnel leads largely along the Paseo del Prado – Paseo de Recoletos – Paseo de la Castellana. This tunnel is often referred to in Madrid Volksmund as “Túnel de la Risa” (tunnel of the laughter), which is due to its 34-year planning and construction period. The name was also transferred to the other two tubes: the western tunnel inaugurated in 2008, the via Sun Gate and Nuevos Ministries leads to Chamartín, and on the regular-lane eastern tunnel for the AVE high-speed trains. The latter was already completed in the shell in 2011, but only put it into operation in July 2022 and officially inaugurated in September 2022. [2] [3] Since commissioning, continuous connections on the standard gauge from the north of Spain to Seville and Valencia and this have been possible without the previously necessary clipping. [first] At the same time, however, the city of Alicante lost its direct AVE connection with the Atocha train station. [first]

On March 11, 2004, the train station became the scene of the Madrid train attacks during the morning rush hour.
