On the one hand, the film shows the past lifestyle of the manor house and the surrounding poverty of the working, on the other hand the decadent aristocracy and its inability to detach themselves from their traditional hierarchies and to find human interaction. Film criticism recognized a criticism of the Portugal of the repressive Estado Novo regime, which closes a new, more human society and adheres to traditional conditions.
