Hans Louis Trefese was a son of the doctor George L. Trefousse and Elisabeth Albersheim. In 1936 the family fled to the United States before the persecution of Jews in the Third Reich. After acquiring a Bachelor in 1942 as a member of Phi Beta Kappa at City College of New York, he volunteered to the US Army. He took part in the Second World War as an interrogation officer and interrogated prisoners of war on the German western front. With the help of G.I. Bill, he studied American history at Columbia University and in 1947 he acquired his master on the subject of “Survey of German-American Relations, 1933–1939”. Three years later he became a topic at Columbia Germany and American Neutrality, 1939–1941 PhD. He taught at Brooklyn College, initially in 1946, then from 1950 to 1958, as a lecturer. From 1958 to 1966 he held assistant professorships and was appointed professor in 1966. He died of the consequences of a stroke suffered in autumn 2009. [first] [2] [3] [4] In 1947 he married Rashelle Friedlander, who died in 1999, they had a son. Second World War [ Edit | Edit the source text ] Treffeouses published in 1951 German and American Neutrality, 1939-1941 treats Adolf Hitler’s attempts and their failure to keep the United States from World War II for as long as possible. Reviews were often positive. [5] Reconstruction [ Edit | Edit the source text ] This article or section needs to be revised: Grammar, relationship and expression error, style Please help to improve it and then remove this marking. Even after the Second World War there was the historiography of the reconstruction Dunning-School before, named after the important representative William Archibald Dunning, who understood the reconstruction (and its representatives, the Radical Republicans) as a punishment of the southern states through the north states. At the end of the 1950s, historians such as Eric McKitrick and meet the reconstruction, however, more positively and as a vanguard for Lincoln’s racial justice. Treffeous’s first work on the reconstruction, published in 1957 Ben Butler: The South Called Him Beast! , deals with one of the most unpopular radical Republicans, Benjamin “Biest” Butler, a Republican MP who had occupied New Orleans during the Section War. Treffousse evaluates him positively and focuses on Butler’s service during the secession war, in which the crew of New Orleans comes to the fore. Butler was a good administrator, but was a bad general. During his tenure as a representative, he was one of the most important supporters of civil rights for blacks. It is the second biography of Butler after the one published in 1954 Stormy Ben Butler by Robert S. Holzman, who also sees Butler positively. Reviews were positive. W. Darrell Overdyke describes the book as well -written and interesting for all Louisians. [6] Louis Filler describes Treffeouse’s biography and the biography of Holzman as excellent. [7] Samuel Shapiro praises the book as a whole, but Butler’s support of blacks is exaggerated. [8] The published in 1963 Benjamin Franklin Wade: Radical Republican from Ohio is a biography of the Radical Republican Senator Benjamin “Bluff” Wade, which from 1861 to 1862 led the influential United States Congress Joint Committee on the Conduct of the War and was the President Pro Tempore of the Senate from 1867 to 1869. His criticism of the Republican President Abraham Lincoln for the gentle treatment of the former Confeder and the southern states was also significant. Treffouses’s biography was the first biography of Wade. Wade was often negatively rated in previous historical works. Trefousse, on the other hand, praises Wade particularly for its progressiveness. Much of the book was devoted to the time of the Section War. He evaluates his leadership of the Joint Committee on the Conduct of the War as suitable during the war. On the other hand, he evaluates Wades criticism of Lincoln as his big mistake. The President Andrew Johnson, an opponent of the Radical Republicans, sees Treffousse critically. Harry L. Coles sees the best aspects of the work in the clear style, thorough research and objectivity. Nevertheless, the interpretation of Treffousse is to black and white. [9] According to David Montgomery, the role of Wade was exaggerated, but he praises the biography as a whole. [ten] Jack B. Scroggs sees the book as an important contribution to the historiography of the reconstruction. There were only smaller editorial mistakes. [11] Frank B. Evans praises the book, but it is not a standard work. [twelfth] After Treffese wrote two biographies by Radical Republicans, he wrote with the 1969 published The Radical Republicans: Lincoln’s Vanguard for Racial Justice A work over the entire Radical Republicans. Since no studies on the entire Radical Republicans had been published up to this point, Treffousse is only looking for the basic questions to answer the Radical Republicans. These include the questions about their identity, their individual differences, their motifs and their strengths and weaknesses. He sees them as a connection between human rights and political realism; They were not extremists in the modern sense because they did not try to attack American democracy. Unlike often assumed, Lincoln and the Radical Republicans are not disputed, they are more the shock troops of the Republican Party. Her attack on Johnson only came when he was uncontrolled. Reviews were generally positive. William G. Shade praises the book, but it has several weaknesses. First, he would ignore several questions about her due to his methodology and secondly, he should often ignore the differences in radical republicans. [13] John J. Reed describes it as one of the best works in the area of reconstruction. [14] According to Richard E. Welch, Jr. is not a standard work in all details, but be it the best complete presentation. [15] James M. McPherson sees the book as an important work, but it is not definitely. [16] One year after the office proceedings against Richard Nixon treated meeting in Impeachment of a President: Andrew Johnson, the Blacks, and Reconstruction The office procedure against Andrew Johnson. He focuses on Johnson’s skills as a politician. The Dunning School rates Johnson as an idealist who was unable to compromise with the Radical Republicans, while many supporters of the Radical Republicans like Eric McKitrick Johnson rate as an incompetent politician who lost his power through poor trains. Meeting does not agree to these ratings: his main theses are that Johnson used all political possibilities against the Radical Republicans and that he paved the way for prosüdliche policies such as the compromise of 1877 from the middle of the 1870s. Elizabeth Studley Nathan rates it as an important work on the subject and the thesis as original, although the influence of the office procedure against Nixon is recognizable. [17] Michael Perman follows this rating of the theses. [18] James E. Sefton also praises the book. In addition to a few typing gliders, it is flawless and well written. Overall, he rates it as one of the best works on the US impeachment. [19] Harold M. Hyman praises the book and describes it as the best work on Johnson’s impeachment. [20] Treffeouses Next biography of a Radical Republican was the one published in 1982 Carl Schurz: A Biography , A biography of the German -American Carl Schurz. The main thesis of the biography is that Schurz ’importance is in its leadership of the German -American community in the United States. Although Schurz broke and became more moderate with the Radical Republicans later, he never lost his beliefs. Geoffrey Blodgett describes the main thesis of the book as interesting, but he sees the influence of schurz as less, since the German -Americans were too diverse in order to be a one -story leader of the entire group. Treffese is aware of this, although he does not do a deeper analysis about it. [21] Richard L. McCormick praises the book, but he criticizes the lack of a description of the privately life. [22] Hugh Brogan praises the book. [23] Robert L. Beisner sees the book positively; A description of his personality would have been helpful. [24] Published in 1989 Andrew Johnson: A Biography Treffousse devoted himself to one of the most important opponents of the Radical Republicans. He describes Johnson as an opportunist who, unlike many of his contemporaries, saw politics as a career. Furthermore, Johnson was an agraist who was opposed to the industrialism of the Radical Republicans. He also supports the thesis from his work Impeachment of a President: Andrew Johnson, the Blacks, and Reconstruction that Andrew Johnson’s skills as a politician paved prosüdliche policies. The reviews generally failed. [25] Brooks D. Simpson praises the book as a complete description of Johnson, but it has little new theses. [26] Donald E. Reynolds joins the latter and praises Treffousse for his good style. [27] Richard N. Current sees the book positively. [28] Peter Rachleff criticizes that the book questions too many, e.g. B. leaves the success of Johnson’s view of politics as a career. [29] Trefouses 1997 published Thaddeus Stevens: Nineteenth-Century Egalitarian is a biography of the leader of the Radical Republicans Thaddeus Stevens, which, like many Radical Republicans from the Dunning School, was negatively assessed as a “dictator of the (representative) house”. He rejects this evaluation; Many of Stevens’ suggestions, such as confiscation of confederated lands, came across deaf ears. Treffousse also rejects allegations that Steven’s women’s hero was and otherwise had a scandalous private life. The allegation of an affair with his housekeeper Lydia Hamilton Smith, a “Mulatte”, is difficult to refute or prove. Treffousse dates the change from him to the abolitionist on a court case in which Stevens defended a slave holder in front of a slave. The slave argued that he was in the state of Pennsylvania for 6 months, which is why he would be automatically released according to the laws of the state. However, Stevens won the case with the argument that the slave was not consistently in Pennsylvania for the 6 months. Stevens is said to have made the shame for this court. As the name suggests, Treffousse sees him as an important advocate of egalitarianism. Willard Carl Klunder praises Treffe’s description of Steven’s public life, but there are only a few new knowledge about his motifs or his private life. [30] Tyler Anchor also sees no new interpretations in the book; The strengths of the book are in the style of Trefeouses. Nevertheless, it is a standard work for Stevens. [thirty first] Bryon C. Andreasen also rates it as an important work. [32] John Edmond Gonzales joins this. [33] James Brewer Stewart praises the book. [34] part of American Presidents Series is Rutherford B. Hayes , a biography of Rutherford B. Hayes, in which focus is on the presidential election in 1876. The one published in 2005 „First Among Equals“: Abraham Lincoln’s Reputation during His Administration treats Abraham Lincoln’s reputation during his presidency. After the study published in 1943 The Unpopular Mr. Lincoln From James G. Randall it was common assumption that Lincoln was rather unpopular during his presidency. Treffousse is not true: from the inauguration to the assassination attempt among the population, he was considered an honest, wise and moral leader. The introduction and the years of the presidency each dedicate one chapter to one chapter.According to Dan Monroe, Treffousse ignores the criticism of the abolitionists of Lincoln. [35] Michael Green describes the book as a joy. [36] Michael Vorenberg criticizes Treffouse’s selection of primary sources. He also criticizes Treffouses Bias for Lincoln. [37] Before his death, he researched a work that would deal with Lincoln’s foreign policy.
