On December 31, 2011, the “official population” for Oberhausen was 212,568 (only main residents and after comparing with the other state offices). [first] Inhabitant development of Oberhausen from 1862 to 2018 In the Middle Ages and the early modern period, only a few hundred people lived in the field of today’s Oberhausen. The population grew very slowly and went back again and again because of the numerous wars, epidemics and famines. On February 1, 1862, the Oberhausen mayor was formed from parts of six other municipalities. The municipality of Borbeck delivered the original cell and the largest proportion of territories (two thirds) with the districts of Lippern and Lirich. In addition, there were parts of Alstaden, Dümpten, Styrum and the Mayor’s Department in Mülheim-Land, as well as smaller parts of Meiderich and Buschhausen. Already twelve years later, on September 10, 1874, the municipality of Oberhausen received city rights by introducing the city regulations. With the beginning of industrialization in the middle of the 19th century, population growth accelerated. In 1862, 5590 people lived in the community. In the census of December 1, 1871, 1113 houses and 12,805 inhabitants (including 3176 local; 7497 male and 5308 female) were determined. In 1885 there were 1575 houses and 20,371 inhabitants (10,968 male and 9403 female). With the incorporation of parts of Borbeck, Dellwig and Frintrop on April 1, 1915, the population of the city of Oberhausen crossed the border of 100,000, making it a big city. On August 1, 1929, an increase of more than 80,000 people to 194,000 inhabitants brought Sterkrade (50,661 inhabitants 1925) and Osterfeld (32,655 inhabitants 1925). The effects of the Second World War are clearly visible. The Allied air strikes destroyed large parts of the city. The population dropped from 192,000 in May 1939 to 100,000 in April 1945. After the war ended, the city’s population rose to their historical maximum of 260,570 by the return of the forced vacuums and the influx of numerous refugees and displaced persons from the German eastern areas by 1963. In 2019, the city was 15th with 210,764 inhabitants among the major German cities within North Rhine-Westphalia. This has been a decline of 19.1 percent (49,806 people) since 1963. The following overview shows the population according to the respective Area level. Until 1870, these were estimates, then census results (¹) or official continuation of the city administration (until 1970) and the State Statistical Office (from 1971). From 1871, the information refers to the “local population”, from 1925 to the resident population and since 1987 to the “population at the site of the main apartment”. Before 1871, the number of inhabitants was determined according to inconsistent survey procedures.
