During the Carnatic wars in which France and Great Britain for dominance in southern India were conquered twice by the British. As a result of the war, France had to hand over most of his possessions in India to Great Britain in the Paris Peace in 1763. Karaical, however, remained one of five commercial base in French hands. After the city was once again occupied by the British during the coalition wars, France only received total control over karaical in 1817. After India became independent in 1947, the French colonies announced in 1954. The contract, in which France ceded its colonies to India, was concluded in 1956, but only occurred in 1962 after ratification by the French Parliament de jure in force. The following year, the Union territory was founded Puducherry, to which Karaical also came. The city center of Karaikals has a regular, chess board -like road network. A number of preserved colonial buildings and the old French cemetery are reminiscent of French.
