Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum (New York)

The Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum is a multifunctional arena in Uniondale on Long Island in the US state of New York. The Coliseum is about 30 kilometers away from New York City. It was the home of the New York Islanders from the National Hockey League (NHL). The $ 32 million at the time Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum was officially opened on May 29, 1972. The first event in the hall, a basketball game of the New York Nets, took place on February 11th of the year. The hall offers 32 luxurious suites and 6800 parking spaces are available around the Coliseum. [2] The Coliseum comprises 255,000 m² of the Mitchel Fields, which used to be a terrain of the U.S. Army and Air Force was.

The New York Raiders, who represented the flagship of the World Hockey Association, should initially play their home games in the new arena. However, the Nassau County did not consider settling a WHA team there and also didn’t want to have anything to do with the Raiders. Nassau County commissioned William Shea to accommodate a NHL team in the Coliseum. The NHL in a hurry in a franchise in Long Island; The New York Islanders. As a result, the Raiders found their home in Madison Square Garden in the shadow of the New York Rangers.

The Coliseum was also the Heimarena of the New York Saints (National Lacrosse League), which played there from 1998 to 2003. The Saints stopped playing in 2004. In the past, the New York Arrows and later the New York Express from the Major Indoor Soccer League also played here. Even before, from 1972 to 1977, the Coliseum was also home to the New York Nets of the American Basketball Association, which later also played in the National Basketball Association. The first and second round games of the basketball tournament of the National Collegiate Athletic Association were also held there.

The Coliseum is also used for concerts and other types of shows as well as for large sales events. Billy Joel, who grew up on Long Island, is one of the most common tenants. He usually organizes several appearances when he is on tour. In the mid -1990s, his own number next to the heroes of the Islanders under the roof of the Coliseum was hung for a while, which should represent its numerous sold -out concerts.

Initially, Minor League games took place under the roof until the Islanders franchise became a long-term tenant. In 2005, Minor League games also took place there again. The Bridgeport Sound Tigers team from the American Hockey League played two home games there. This happened during the lockout. The original capacity of the Coliseum varied between 12,000 and 15,000 depending on the event. In the early 1980s, the maximum capacity was increased to 18,100, at concerts. Before the renovation, 16,234 at ice hockey games, 17,686 at concerts and 17,686 spectators at concerts.

In the 2018/19 season, the New York Islanders temporarily returned to their old homeland. The team carried 12 of the 41 home games of the regular season here, a number that was later increased to 20. The other 21 games took place in the Barclays Center. [3] [4] In addition, a tennis tournament of the ATP World Tour in the Coliseum took place for the first time in February 2018 – the New York Open. [5] Since the Barclays Center did not convince as a new home venue, the home games of the 2019/20 season were also shared between Barclays Center and Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum before spending the 2020/21 season in the Coliseum. In the 2021/22 season, the Islanders moved to the newly built UBS Arena and on November 20, 2021 contested their first NHL game in the new hall against the Vancouver Canucks (2: 5).

With the 16,234 places in ice hockey games this is Coliseum after Canada Life Centre In Winnipeg (15,015 places) the smallest venue of the North American ice hockey league. In 2004 there were some officials in awareness to work out and implement a renovation plan, so that a new construction of a new arena would be unnecessary. The heart of the Lighthouse-Project Was a tower that had the appearance of a lighthouse. Other plans also provided for new housing accommodations and other sports facilities as well as a hotel. The estimated costs were around $ 200 million. Local complaints and the NHL-Lockout in the 2004/05 season meant that only small progress was made in planning. So it happened that the Islanders considered building a new arena in the neighboring Suffolk County.

In the end, the blueprints were set and since the 2015/16 season, the New York Islanders have been playing their home games at the Brooklyn Barclays Center. [6] The Long Island Nets basketball team from the NBA G-League will move to the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum for the 2017/18 season. The games of the 2016/17 season will be the Nets still play in the Barclays Center. [7]
