Alex Westlund (Born December 28, 1975 in Flemington Village, New Jersey) is a former American ice hockey goalkeeper and current coach.
Westlund began his career in the Yale University team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association and was then able to switch to the East Coast Hockey League, where he played two seasons at the Dayton Bombers and achieved good statistics. In the following years he switched between different teams in the smaller leagues before he received a commitment abroad for the first time in the 2002/03 season. The Russian first division club Amur Chabarovsk signed him for two seasons. In the first, Westlund was able to show excellent performance, but in the following he could no longer connect to it.
In the 2004/05 season he returned to North America and played for Charlotte Checkers for two seasons before the Slovenian team HDD Olimpija Ljubljana brought him back to Europe. Westlund showed outstanding achievements and proved to be a strong backing for his team, which played their first season in the Austrian ice hockey league and was able to surprise with a final participation.
Already in autumn 2007 he signed a 2-year contract, from the 2008/09 season at the EHC Linz. The Laibacher offered a transfer fee to keep the goalkeeper, but the Linz rejected this, so that Western Lund is now in Linz. In his second season he managed the runner -up title for the time being. Two years later, in the 2011/12 season, he became the Black Wings Linz after excellent performance by Austrian ice hockey champions. In November 2012, he was released by the Black Wings due to the weak appearance and a catch rate below 90%. [first]
In January 2013, Westlund signed a contract with the Heilbronn Falcons in the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga until the end of the season.
In the 2013/14 season he briefly played at the Wheeling Nailers in the Echl [2] , before moving to the Kroatian association KHL Medveščak Zagreb in January 2014. [3]
During the 2014/15 season, China Dragon was under contract in Shanghai and ended his player career after the season. [4]
As early as January 2013, Westlund was employed between his player management abroad as a goalkeeper coach at Pro Crete Goaltending, a provider of training programs and camps. [5] In July 2015, the Augsburg Panther from the German ice hockey league signed him as goalkeeper coach. [6] For the 2016/17 season he switched from the continental hockey league in the same position to the KHL Medveščak Zagreb. [7]
Although an average of 36 shots per game were fired on him in the 2007/08 season, Westlund managed to lead the goalkeeper statistics of the Austrian ice hockey league to the basic round and in the playoff. In the playoff he even reached 94.65%, but injured himself in the penultimate game, so that his backup Klemen had to take over Mohorič. His team HDD Olimpija Ljubljana then lost the final series.
In March of the 2009/10 season, Westlund was elected MVP of the Austrian Bundesliga by the Austrian media.
