The AFC Champions League 2009 was the 28th edition of the highest continental competition in Asia, which was held under his current name for the seventh. The winner of the competition qualified for the 2009 FIFA Club World Cup.

A total of 38 teams took part in the AFC Champions League 2009. After completing the qualification round, 31 teams and the defending champion from the previous year took part in the main round.

* The associations of the finalists of the AFC Cup 2008 did not meet the AFC participation criteria. Both clubs were transferred to the AFC Cup.

*FC Binh Duong was originally eligible to qualify for the AFC Champions League 2009, but could not meet the necessary criteria of the AFC Champions League. PSMS Medan was automatically one round.

In the group phase, 32 teams played in eight groups, each with four teams in the league mode (first and second leg). The teams were divided from a geographical point of view. The teams from West and Central Asia played in groups A to D, in groups E to G the teams from East and Southeast Asia competed. The two groups qualified for the final round of the last 16. The tournament was held with the three-point rule.

The quarter -finals were drawn, but not two teams from a country can meet directly. The teams played out the tournament winner in the knockout system with the first and second leg, with the away goal rule. The tournament winner qualified for the 2009 FIFA Club World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.
