From 1940 to 1941 he ran field studies as part of the wildlife management of the University of Missouri. In 1942 he married Edith Grace Denniston. The children John Denniston Berger and Diana Marie Berger emerged from this marriage. From 1941 to 1946 he served as an officer at the United States Army Air Corps. After the war, he continued his military service as a reservist at the United States Army Air Forces and was released with the rank of a lieutenant colonel. In 1946, Berger wrote down in the University of Michigan, where he received his doctorate in the Three Subfamily of Cuculiformes in 1947 with the comparative functional morphology of the pelvic appendage in the three. From 1951 to 1963 he taught macroscopic anatomy at the University of Michigan Medical School. Between 1954 and the end of 1963 he carried out field studies to research the way of life and the breeding behavior of the Michiganwald singer. In the spring semester of 1964 he accepted a visiting professorship at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
