UNESCO project schools anchor the goals and values of the UNESCO in their school profiles and guiding principles as well as in everyday school life and pedagogical work. Both teachers as well as students and parents take part in extra -curricular activities and projects. The work on the UNESCO goals is designed and implemented independently by the UNESCO project schools. In order to work effectively, many schools cooperate with each other and with partner institutions and they take part in national and international seminars. For many schools, the highlight of their work is the international UNESCO project day taking place every two years. In Germany there are around 300 UNESCO project schools, in Austria 95 (as of August 2020) and around 60, around 11,500 educational institutions in more than 180 countries on earth in Switzerland.

There are almost 300 UNESCO project schools in Germany in all 16 federal states. Such schools are very “normal schools” of all types of school. Elementary schools, community, high schools, comprehensive schools, vocational schools, state regular school and private schools can in principle obtain such a status as well as kindergartens and institutions of teaching impressions. The UNESCO project schools belong to the global UNESCO Associated Schools Network. In Germany, the UNESCO project schools of the individual federal states are supported by the responsible school authority or the corresponding Ministry of Culture. The federal coordination of the UNESCO project schools responsible for the UNESCO school network in Germany is located at the German UNESCO Commission.

UNESCO is a special organization of the United Nations and was founded in 1946. UNESCO stands for United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization what translated Organization of the United Nations for Education, Science, Culture is called. From the beginning, education was a central goal and a very strong element of the UNESCO work. They wanted to train the students directly and, above all, build a better international understanding. That is why UNESCO founded the Associated Schools Project in 1953 in order to integrate schools into the work of UNESCO. In Germany, these schools are called “UNESCO Projektschule” and with the Hamburg Helene Lange School (today: Helene-Lange-Gymnasium), the first German school received the status as a UNESCO model school, which has now been further developed into a UNESCO project school.

Fulfillment [ Edit | Edit the source text ]

The “Guide for Members” of the UNESCO Associated School Network is decisive for the network of UNESCO project schools. [2] There is also a quality paper in Germany [3] that is centrally for the German network of UNESCO project schools. The associated standards of quality development as UNESCO project schools are implemented by the schools of the network in the sense of the Whole School Approach. Working as a UNESCO project school is therefore based on the participation of all groups of people involved in the school (pupils, teachers, school management, parents, school authorities and external partners). The schools also develop their own ideas and work in the network together with other UNESCO project schools, organizations and people. In order to participate in the international network, many schools close school partnerships or letter friendships with schools all over the world. In addition, attempts are made to enable encounters, for example, intercultural encounters and seminars are organized. It should be taken care of that at work the philosophy of UNESCO „think global – act local“ (think globally – act locally) is observed. This means that you should do things locally, in the area of your own possibilities, for example, help a poor village or a bombed school through worldwide joint actions and educate your own students about the goals of the UNESCO.

Participation and commitment to work are very different in schools. There are many active schools that have working groups in which they work. In other schools, a guiding goal is processed by a project team with a focus.

International project days [ Edit | Edit the source text ]

An international project day has been taking place every two years since 1996, each with a topic that is comprehensively prepared at a specialist conference of the UNESCO project schools. The topics usually deal with the current events and problems. Work on this topic can last for months and is often connected to a project day at school. Most UNESCO project schools take part in this project day. In addition, other schools are always invited to this project. The highlight of the day or the long -term work is the nationwide central events that are designed as possible in the media as possible in order to reach a general public. Other regional events are usually also taking place, as the journey to the central events is difficult for many. Of course, this also creates a lot more people.

UNESCO pencils [ Edit | Edit the source text ]

UNESCO started a global literacy campaign in the 90s. A contribution by the UNESCO project schools was to sell pencils and donate the income. The pencils are a symbol of writing, they are made of natural wood, have the UNESCO symbol and indicate “basic education for everyone” in German, English, French and Spanish. Part of the money goes to a project by the Helene Lange School in Wiesbaden to “build and restore” schools in Nepal. The schools that have sold the pens can determine the use of a just as much a share of the money itself. The money must be used for social projects or donated to well -known aid organizations. The sale of the UNESCO pencils is always a way to attentive to the goals of the UNESCO.

School coordination [ Edit | Edit the source text ]

There is a coordinator in every school. He or she is responsible for the UNESCO work and organization at the school and regularly takes part in conferences. He or she is also the contact for suggestions, invitations to school seminars, questions and activities.

State coordination [ Edit | Edit the source text ]

In every federal state there is a state coordinator who is usually working at a school. He or she is chosen by school coordinations in most federal states and is intended to advise and inform the schools (for example, about conferences and circular). Furthermore, he or she does public relations at the state level and is responsible for working with the Ministry of Culture and the school authorities.

Project coordination [ Edit | Edit the source text ]

In addition to the school and state coordinations, there is also the possibility of setting up project coordinations that look after specific projects, such as: B. the international Baltic project Baltic Sea Project or in the past also the Blue Danube Project or to form the world.

Federal coordination [ Edit | Edit the source text ]

For Germany there is a federal coordinator who is set by the Office Conference of the Conference of Ministers of Culture (KMK) in the alternation of the federal states for an term of at least three years. She or he is responsible for the cooperation of the Network of the UNESCO project schools together with the state and school coordinations, informs them, supports them at work and promotes the exchange of experiences and cooperation with each other. For this purpose, he invites you to the conference of the UNESCO project schools once a year and at least twice a year for the state coordinator meeting. In addition, he or she is the representative of the UNESCO project schools in Germany, is therefore a contact for cultural and school authorities and forms the interface for the international coordination of the Network of the UNESCO Associated School at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. Another task is to build and maintain international contacts. The Federal Coordination of the UNESCO project schools is located in the German UNESCO Commission, its office is located in Bonn. Klaus Schilling has been the Federal Coordinator of the UNESCO project schools since 2019. [4]

It is a multi -stage process. In Germany, the first stage is an interested school at the country level, the second employee school at the national level and the third recognized UNESCO project school as part of the global network. [5] In order to become a UNESCO project school, you first have to show your interest in UNESCO’s topics through school work and show interest at the state level. The use of the interested UNESCO project school can be used as “Employees UNESCO project school” connect. The application is directed to the federal coordination via the state coordination and the Ministry of Culture. The following criteria are decisive:

  • You have to be a school or an educational institution;
  • Vote of the school conference;
  • School profile;
  • Reason for the application;
  • Reports about activities that are similar to that of a UNESCO project school (especially the point of international understanding);
  • Goal ideas.

The school authority and the Ministry of Culture, together with the state and federal coordination, make the decision. During the applications, an attempt is made to maintain a balance between the school types.

To a “Recognized UNESCO project school” After two to three years, an “employee UNESCO project school” must send an application for federal coordination with an application for the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. There is an application form for this application that must meet the following criteria:

  • Approval of the school conference;
  • Support by the school authority or the Ministry of Culture;
  • Support of the German UNESCO Commission.

If the application is approved, the school receives a certificate and can now be called “recognized UNESCO project school”. The document is signed by the UNESCO general directorate.

If schools regularly take part in projects, seminars and other events from UNESCO project schools, these are considered Interested UNESCO project schools .

Internationally, more than 11,500 schools form a network of various educational institutions from over 180 countries, which UNESCO Associated Schools Network calls itself. Each of the schools in the Associated School Network is a “UNESCO project school”, so all schools from Paris from Paris are a member of the Associated School Network. In the past, the International UNESCO school network bore the name Associated Schools Project. This name has been preserved in the internationally used abbreviation for the global school network as Aspnet. Internationally, all of these schools pursue the same goals, work internationally and organize, exchanges, seminars and workshops. The ASP network was launched in 1953, seven years after the foundation of the UNESCO.
