The Catholic University of Ireland was initially a Catholic university in Ireland; In 1851 it was transferred to the responsibility of the “Royal University of Ireland”. Neither theology nor other humanities were taught at this university; The then Cardinal Paul Cullen found this state to be baseless and forbid the Catholics of studying this “godless college”.

Wilhelminian era [ Edit | Edit the source text ]

The foundation of an autonomous Catholic University of Ireland originated from the Irish Bishopric Synod of Thurles in 1850. The bishops considered it necessary to found their own Catholic university, and asked Pope Pius IX with the request to agree with this concern. The Pope supported the application and announced the opening with his encyclical optimal noscitis of March 20, 1854. The first rector became John Henry Newman (later cardinal); Under his leadership, the first lectures began on November 3, 1854 with seventeen enrolled students. However, the Catholic University was not granted a great success; Since no student was able to achieve an academic degree, the number of students continued and further and in 1857 Newman left the university.

Reforms and reforms [ Edit | Edit the source text ]

After only three students were enrolled in 1879, the situation changed in 1880 when the remaining stock of this university was connected to the Royal University of Ireland and the students could now also get graduated degrees. After this reform, the CUI still had some institutes and the St. Patrick’s College in Maynooth. This was largely created from this college University College Dublin (UCD), which was taken over by the Jesuits in 1883, with the exception of the medical faculty.

In a further reform, the fragments of the Catholic University were incorporated into the UCD in 1908. The UCD was subsequently in the 1908 National University of Ireland Recorded and thus the autonomy of the Catholic University of Ireland came to an end. At the “University College Dublin (UCD)”, there are now the following courses: Art, Celtic History, Natural Sciences, Economics, Law, Medicine and Technology. The UCD also offers courses in agriculture and veterinary medicine.

The Medical University was founded in 1855 by the Catholic University and received great recognition among the graduates and the affiliated medical institutes. It was therefore considered the most successful element of the CUI and became the largest medical university in Ireland until 1900. The “Catholic University of Medicine” has been presenting the teaching staff for the Medical Faculty at the UCD since 1908.
