Environmental Development – Wikipedia, free encyclopedia
He Environmental performance index O Environmental Performance Index (English: Environmental Performance Index , acronym EPI) is a method to quantify and classify numerically the environmental performance of a country’s policies. The EPI was preceded by the Environmental Sustainability Index (English: Environmental Sustainability Index , acronym ESI), published between 1999 and 2005. Both indicators were developed by the Yale University Policy and Law Center, together with the Information Network of the International Center for Earth Sciences of the University of Columbia. The ESI was developed to evaluate relative sustainability between countries. Due to changes in the research team approach developed by the ESI, the new EPI index uses results -oriented indicators, so it serves as a comparison index, thus allowing a better understanding by politicians, scientists, environmental defenders and the general public. Until January 2015, five reports have been published, the 2006 Pilot Environmental Performance Index, [ 2 ] The 2008 environmental performance index, [ 3 ] The 2010 Environmental Performance Index. [ 4 ] The 2012 Environmental Performance Index, the 2015 Environmental Performance Index. [ 5 ] And the 2018 Environmental Development Index.
Variables EPI 2008 [ To edit ]
For the calculation of the EPI of 2008, the researchers modified the methodology used in the estimation of the 2006 index. [ 6 ]
The variables are divided into two great objectives, environmental health and vitality of ecosystems. In turn, environmental health is divided into three policy categories: the impact of the environment on health, drinking water and basic sanitation, and the effects of air quality on health. Environmental vitality is divided into five policy categories: effects of air pollution on ecosystems, water resources, biodiversity and habitat, productive natural resources and climate change. Under these categories the following 25 indicators were evaluated.
