The Reggio Calabria Airport (ital.: Reggio Calabria Airport – Strait Airport “Tito Minniti” ) is located in the south of Reggio Calabria, at the top of the Italian boot, not far from the Sicilian port city of Messina. Together with the airports of Lamezia Terme and Crotone, it is one of the three commercial airports in the Calabria region.

Reggio Calabria Airport was created in 1939 as a military airfield and named after the pilot Tito Minniti. The first line flights were recorded in April 1947. In 1976 the airport definitely passed the civil aviation management. The Lamezia Terme Airport, which was also opened at the same time, quickly became a competitor due to its more central location in Calabria. The relatively short starting and landingways in Reggio Calabria also disabled a more positive development of commercial air traffic. The expansion of the Reggio Calabria airport has now been accelerated somewhat.

  • Kfz: From the terminal, the via Ravagnese leads in the north towards the city center, almost five kilometers away, in the southeast of the state road 106. The latter bypasses the city center as RA4 in the north and has connection to the A2 motorway and the national road 18 next to Naples , In the opposite direction, the SS 106 leads along the southern Ionian coast to Taranto in Apulia. A number of streets from the main traffic axes are branched off into the ASPROMONTE.
  • Bus: The urban ATAM buses connect the airport with the city center, the harbor and the main train station. A bus line called “Volobus” drives to the port of Villa San Giovanni further north, from where there are ferry connections to Messina. The “Jonica Line” bus line offers trips to Caulonia on the south coast of Calabria.
  • Boot: Boats connect the airport to the ports of Reggio Calabria, Villa San Giovanni and Messina ( metromare ) as well as with the Aeolian islands. Buses go from the terminal to the boat dock in the south of the airport.
  • Train: In February 2013, the stop was near the airport on the Taranto -Reggio di Calabria railway line Reggio Calabria Airport opened. From there, regional railways drive to Reggio Calabria main station and to Villa San Giovanni. Shuttle buses run between the airport terminal and the new stop.

ITA Airways flies from Reggio Calabria to Rome and Milan several times a day.

In aviation circles the Strait Airport Respectfully referred to as European Kai Tak. The approaching process on the runway 33 is similar to the famous Checkerboard Approach of the former Hong Kong Airport.

The approach to train 33 in Reggio Calabria is a challenge for pilots for the following reasons:

  • It is an ILS-like approach without a sliding path (a so-called. Circling non precision Approach ) to carry out in a topographically difficult area. Four different heights must be observed exactly.
  • The final flight course is mixed by 46 ° (in Kai Tak 43 °) opposite the landing railway direction. The necessary correction must take place in the last part of the approach.
  • The runway is short.

The approach may only be carried out with a special training. Numerous optical aids help with flight guide. The airport is working on improving the situation. In the database of the Aviation Safety Network [2] , in which severe flight incidents and accidents have been recorded since 1943, there is not a single approach.

  • On May 24, 1969, a Fokker F-27-600 of the Italian Aero Trasporti Italiani (ATI) had an accident with the aircraft license plate I-so Coming from Rome when landing at Reggio Calabria Airport. Both pilot seats were occupied by trainees, while the training captain was sitting on the jumpseat. The machine opened in front of the runway, the chassis collapsed and the plane fell on the runway 15. In the accident, a passenger died, the other 35 inmates survived the accident. The plane that was only a year old was destroyed. [3]
