For the American film director, film producer and screenwriter, see Francis Thompson (director). Francis Thompson (Born December 18, 1859 in Preston, Lancashire, † November 13, 1907 in London) was a British poet and mystic. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});after-content-x4Thompson initially studied Catholic theology at Ushaw College (Durham), later medicine in Manchester. Both courses remained without a degree. In 1885 he went to London. His life was characterized by poverty, deep religiosity and his opium addiction. In the early 1890s, he was supervised and discovered as a poet by the public pair of Wilfred and Alice Meynell, when he lived on the street as an opium addict. He lived with the Meynells for over twenty years if he was not to withdraw in a drug clinic. [first] In his later years of life he lived in the Storrington monastery in Sussex. The Meynells helped him publish his works or acted as the publisher. He wrote most of his poems in the Storrington monastery (Sussex). His most famous poem is The Hound of Heaven (dt. The hunting dog of heaven ). Thompson died of tuberculosis at the age of 48. “The life of extreme deprivation and loneliness was also marked by amazing innerness, sensitivity and deep religious experience. He won support and hope in faith and found a creative answer to the mental needs in the poetry. ”(Franz Wöhrer) (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});after-content-x4“Francis Thompson is a poet one or the other alone, only through the power of language, but this time he is the greatest and most imperative, both because he was not only a denser to return to nature, but the poet of return to God, as well Therefore because he was the poet the return to God without stopping, being a poet of return to nature. That’s it. ”(Theodor Haecker) [2] “The Hound of Heaven” is mentioned in a text about the suicide of the geneticist George R. Price.
