Already in youth in 1758 as an Ensign of the 1st Regiment of Foot Guards into the British army. From 1760 to 1763 he fought in Germany in the Seven Years’ War and in the American War of Independence, he took part in the Battle of Yorktown in 1781. He rose in 1784 until the rank of a major of the 1st regiment of Foot Guards. In 1790 he was promoted to Major General and became commanding officer of the 1st Regiment of Foot Guards in 1792. He led his regiment in 1793 in the army of the Duke of York and Albany against the French revolutionary troops in Flanders. In 1794 he became Colonel des 53rd Regiment of Foot and 1796 Colonel des 73rd Regiment of Foot . From 1796 to 1798 he was commander-in-chief of the British troops in the province of Ulster and was promoted to Lieutenant-General in 1797. In the Irish uprising of 1798, he contributed hard to put down the uprising. From April to June 1798 he was British commander -in -chief in Ireland and then until 1799 commander -in -chief of the British troops in the County Leitrim. In the Battle of the Vinegar Hill near Wexford, in June 1798, as a military leader, he was able to make the 20,000 -strong rebel army crucial with around 10,000 men. He had to accept a setback when he tried 6,000 men in August 1798 to overwhelm a French-Irish landing force of 2,000 men. The British were surprised by the opponents in the Battle of Castlebar and there was a panic -like escape of the British, in which the general also lost his personal luggage. However, the defeat remained without consequences, since the opponents were finally defeated a few weeks later. In 1800 he became the colonel of the 80th Regiment of Foot appointed and a little later sent to British-India in order to take command as commander-in-chief in India. In 1802 he was promoted to general. Thanks to his reorganization measures, in 1803, when the second marathic war broke out, he managed to conquer the Indians near Aligarh in a short episode, to conquer the cities of Delhi and Agra and finally win a decisive victory in the Battle of Lastwari. However, the siege of Bharatpure failed due to the lack of a siege artillery. For his merits and success in India, he was titled in 1804 with the title Baron Lake , of Delhi and Laswary and Aston Clinton in the County of Buckingham, raised to hereditary peer. He became a member of the House of Lord. Three years later, the survey followed Viscount Lake , of Delhi and Laswary and of Aston Clinton in the County of Buckingham. When he returned to Great Britain from India in 1807, he was appointed governor of Plymouth and Receiver General of the Duchy of Cornwall and had both offices until his death.
