Holdorf (pronounced with short “O”) is a unit community in the Vechta district in Lower Saxony. The municipality is located in the Oldenburger Münsterland and is a member of the Dammer Berge recreation area.

Holdorf is located on the northwestern edge of the Dümmer Nature Park, northwest of Damme and the Dammer Bergen.

Moderate naval class influences by moist northwest winds from the North Sea. On the long -term average, the air temperature in Holdorf reaches 8.5 ° – 9.0 ° C, and about 700 mm of precipitation. Several graves indicate a settlement of the community during the Neolithic and the Bronze Age. The municipality of Holdorf was first mentioned in 1188. In the new construction area “Am Lagerweg” on the eastern outskirts of Holdorf, the largest early medieval settlement in the Oldenburg region was discovered. Among other things, the remains of twelve so -called longhouses, which have now been discovered during excavations in Holdorf, prove that from the period between the 8th and 14th centuries.

In 1188 the name Holthorpe – today’s Holdorf – was mentioned for the first time by the Osnabrück Cathedral Propst Lentfried. During the Thirty Years’ War from 1618 to 1648, looting and devastation also occurred in Holdorf. Those who had survived the war fought the following time with the consequences of the war: many people hung up due to destroyed fields and harvests, plague and other epidemics struck around. Holdorf did not come to rest afterwards: the Holdorf area was either connected to the state prince in Oldenburg, the Prince -Bishop of Osnabrück or that of Münster. In 1736 the first church in Holdorf was built in the style of a half -timbered chapel. Today’s St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church has existed since 1852. In the 19th century, Holdorf – like the entire Südoldenburg area – was recorded by a dramatic wave of emigration towards the USA. The community, which had become self -employed at the beginning of this century, lost over 33% of its inhabitants from 1825 (around 2300 inhabitants) to 1890 (around 1500 inhabitants). From May 1987 to June 1997, the population of Holdorf has grown by 21.6%(for comparison: Vechta district, Lower Saxony 9.4%) and has exceeded the 6000. In 2019 Holdorf had 7314 inhabitants, of which male 3861, female 3552 (as of September 26, 2019). ^[4]

Storm disaster from 16./17. August 1974

In the night of August 16-17, 1974, Holdorf and the neighboring communities were hit by an eight -hour long -term thunderstorm. Hailcorns fell up to a size of billiard balls and caused damage in the millions.

The Council of the municipality of Holdorf consists of 20 council women and councilors. The current term of office begins on November 1, 2021 and ends on October 31, 2026.

The full -time mayor Wolfgang Krug is also entitled to vote in the local council.

The mayor has been Wolfgang Krug since June 13, 2004, who was nominated by the CDU in 2004, 2011 and 2019. In 2019 he was re -elected with 81.3 percent of the votes. ^{[8] [9]}

In 1968 the circular route “Baum & Natur” was created in Fladderlohausen next to the waterworks of the Oldenburg-Ostfriesische Wasserverband (OOWV). The approximately ten hectare natural pool lake with sandy beach is used for swimming, fishing, surfing, diving or sunbathing. The German life rescue society ensures the safety of bathers. A kiosk is available for meals. An adventure playground with a large play ship in the center as well as slide, climbing device and seesaw is available to younger guests.

The Holdorf tennis facility with several outdoor and indoor spaces is located in the immediate vicinity of the Heidesee. The tennis club based there has existed since 1976.
The site and the riding hall of the riding and driving association offers opportunities for horse lovers. There is also a sports club that offers sports such as football, handball and gymnastics. There is also a sports club in the Handorf-Langenberg district, which offers sports such as football, popular sports, badminton and self-defense.

In August 2011, a swimming stage was handed over to its destination on the Kalksandsteinsee. The lake concert is organized on this stage annually by the local music association. The Kalksandsteinsee neighboring the Heidesee is not accessible to the public apart from this event.

The shooting clubs of the districts of Holdorf, Fladderlohausen and Handorf-Langenberg organize a shooting festival every year.

A regulars’ table among entrepreneurs takes place every four weeks. By building the roundabout on federal road 214, a roundabout with five trips, the industrial area “in the meadows” is to be further developed. Holdorf is located on the federal highway A 1, which is currently being expanded six -striped, and on the federal road B 214. The municipality is also located directly on the Delmenhorst – Hesepe railway line and the train station there is through RB 58 (Osnabrück – Bremen) every hour served the trains of the Northwest Railway. In Holdorf there are three daycare centers under Catholic sponsorship and two daycare centers in Evangelical Lutheran sponsors: Kath. Kita St. Dominikus (Holder district), Catholic daycare center St. Elisabeth (Holder district), Catholic daycare center St. Barbara (Handorf-Langenberg district ), Ev.-Luth. Kita Martin Luther (Holdorf district) and Ev.-Luth. Kita Katharina von Bora (district of Fladderlohausen). In addition, the municipality has two primary schools: elementary school Holdorf (Holdorf district) and Barbara School (district of Handorf-Langenberg).
