The wood is a German band that was active in the Berlin Underground and Indies scene in the 1990s. Her motto was “two violins and a drum – we don’t need more” [first] Musically, it was a mixture of jazz and classical and modern avant-garde and minimal music, which was only played on wood instruments at the beginning.

The band was founded in spring 1993. Anja Clarissa Gürke and Christian Komorowski were currently working on a soundtrack for a radio play when your lackeys and run-run vanguard singers Alexander Veljanov, who knew Komorowski from a collaboration at Love Sister Hope, for the release party Searched for the first longplayer of his side project. At that time Komorowski was also a live musician at your Lakays (1992 to 1999). [2] [3] The drummer Hermann Beesten Jr. knew Komorowski from the time together at Love Sister Hope. The response was good and so the three musicians decided to continue making music in this line -up. [4]

For the first time talking about itself, the wood made in 1993 with its first appearance at the release party for the run-run-vanguard album Suck Success . At that time, the band consisted of Anja Clarissa Gürke (violin), Christian Komorowski (violin) and Hermann Beesten Jr. (drums). [first]

By winning the Berlin Metrobeat, a newcomer competition with a festival character, the musicians were more popular in 1995; [first] Likewise through the Acoustic tour of your lackeys, on which they appeared as a opening act in the same year, [5] [4] And through concerts with other well -known artists of the scene, such as The Inchtabokatables, Poems for Laila and Element of Crime. The first album also appeared in the same year, The wood , which was recorded purely instrumental and in the minimum line -up, the Trikont music label.

On the second album published in 1997, Velouria , Anja Clarissa Gürke was replaced by the studied violinist Kati Gramß (violin). [first] [8] This album was produced by element-of-crime singer Sven Regener and published at the Dark-Wave label Chrom Records. [7]

At the third album Three (1998) additional instruments were used, including cello (B. interpretation), trumpet (Sven Regener), guitar (El Conde by Love Sister Hop), double bass and sequencer. In addition, guest singer Susie van der Meer and the guest singers Alexander Veljanov (your lackeys) and Sven Regener (Element of Crime) were worked. [first] [9] [ten]

After the third album, the project was put on hold for a limited period of “because the participants are musically otherwise employed”. [first] [6]

Their rather unusual name was chosen according to the band, because at least in the initial phase, only wood instruments were used and the wood made purely acoustic and instrumental music. [4]

The music genre is difficult to determine, the influences range from Eastern European folk music to jazz and classical music to modern avant-garde and minimal music. [ten] [11]

Almost all pieces have first names as title. [11] This concept arose from a spontaneous idea: “At the beginning, when there was only a few songs, we suddenly faced the problem that we could not communicate each other which piece we (e.g. when samples) wanted to play. A song, Pina, reminded us all of us of a girlfriend. So we called it that too. And we found that the characters of certain songs can be described very aptly with first names (Olga, Mikhail). In the meantime, this has become a permanent way of working, there are songs whose names have to be found afterwards, sometimes we orientate ourselves to friends and acquaintances and sometimes we also use the name to make each other clear the character of a piece. ” [4]
