The construction may go back to a medieval castle of the Lords of Geist. The best -known representative was the canon and poet Bernhard von Geist in the 13th century. [first] The property was owned by a branch of the Wolff von Lüdinghausen family before 1427. Later it was owned by the OER family. The house fell to the von Nesselrode family over the daughter of the Landdrosten Jaspar from Oer. In the 16th century it fell to the Loë family. Between 1560 and 1568, builders Laurenz von Brachum the Elder built a new building in the style of the Lippe Renaissance with his sons Rotger and Johannes. In 1593 the castle came to Joachim von Büren by marriage. Moritz von Büren transferred Haus Spirit – like his other property – in 1640 to the Jesuit order. [2]

The order set up a branch there after the death of Burens from 1661. In 1664 Heinrich Turck became Vice Rector of the branch. The missionary Bernhard Havestadt lived there, as did Johann Bernhard Zumziel. After a fire, the north wing was rebuilt in the style of the Baroque between 1750 and 1755 according to plans by Franz Christoph Nagel. The actual construction management was with the Jesuit Franz Pfisterer.

After the order was dissolved, the house fell to the Münster Hochstift in 1773. The income from the Gut Haus Geist went to the so -called study funds to maintain the University of Münster. The Prussian state, which continued the study fund, became the legal successor of the Hochstift after 1803. The state leased Haus Geist in 1884.

In the first decades of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Federal President organized Jagden for the diplomatic corps in the forests of Haus Geist (“ghost wood”). In the meantime, a nature reserve has been designated.

The entire system from the outer bailiff and main building was surrounded by a pet system on two islands. Parts of the trenches were filled in in the 19th century. Significant parts of the buildings were also canceled. The east wing of the business buildings is preserved from Renaissancebau. The former brewery in 1982 was restored by these. The western and northern wings of the farm buildings are made of brick and are provided with spolia in the style of the Renaissance made of sandstone. The baroque north wing of the actual castle building on the main island has been preserved. It comprises two full floors and a mansard roof. The still existing buildings from the time of the Renaissance were canceled in the 19th century. The portal is preserved from this time at the entrance to the gatehouse and similar components.

The castle and monastery had a garden, of which only remains can be seen.
