(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});after-content-x4Johann Jakob Röttinger came from a Nuremberg family of craftsmen who had committed himself to the job of the needler. From 1830 he attended the Royal School of Art in Nuremberg, which was then under the direction of the engraver Albert Reindel (1784–1853). The young artist completed an apprenticeship as a glass painter at the well-known glass and porcelain painter Franz Joseph Sauterleuer (1793–1843) from Weingarten. The apprenticeships enabled him to cooperate in renowned projects, in particular the coat of arms for the tomb chapel Thurn and Taxis in Regensburg and in Lichtenstein Castle. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});after-content-x4In 1844, Röttinger moved his place of residence and work to Zurich in order to start professionally at the glass painter Johann Andreas Hirnschrot (1799–1845), who was also from Nuremberg. After his early death, there was an opportunity to take over the Zurich workshop and to establish itself as an independent glass painter in 1848. His business and professional way of working, the good networking with Zurich scientists such as Johann Rudolf Rahn, Ferdinand Keller and, last but not least, the support of his wife Verena Fehr from Ossingen helped the immigrant to success. Röttinger received large orders in Stadtkirchen – the Zurich Grossmünster (according to designs by Georg Konrad Kellner), [first] the Basel Münster, the St. Galler St. Laurenzenkirche, the city church of Glarus, [2] the Reformed City Church of Solothurn – and in numerous Landkirchen – Unterägeri ZG, Leuggern AG, [3] Kirchdorf AG, Wädenswil ZH, [4] Bünzen Ag, Nottwil Lu, Glis vs. v. to a. The coat of arms created by Röttinger in the town hall in Rapperswil SG, in the cemetery chapel stood NW and for the former cemetery chapel in Schwyz testify to the resumption of the traditional Swiss custom, the coat of arms foundation. The drawing inventory of medieval stained glasses in former Swiss monastery churches, Königsfelden AG and Kappel am Albis ZH, the monastery church Haoterive FR and the Church of Frauenfeld Oberkirch shows the glass painter as an early monument maintenance and restorer. The training of numerous young glass painters from Switzerland and Germany, some of which later opened their own studios, into German and French Switzerland, Alsace and for purchasing glass to Paris and Poland as well as the installation from England for an Anglican Church in the Valais make the workshop under Johann Jakob Röttinger appear as a point of crystallization of the cultural transfer and as a cradle of a whole generation of glass. Röttinger’s stained glass was committed to the zeitgeist according to historicism and late Nazaric painting. The frequently striking effect of his works is underlined by strong color contrasts, the latter is probably a legacy of the Nuremberg training. He got further suggestions in the Mariahilfkirche in Munich, a figurehead of the stained glass in southern Germany. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});after-content-x4Johann Jakob Röttinger died in the middle of working life in 1877 and left seven children; The youngest two and male descendants were still at school. Despite the company that became temporarily necessary, the widow focused on the future, namely the training of its children and the preservation of the property. This made this possible in 1887 – in the year of death Verena Röttingers – the reopening of the studio by his sons Jakob Georg Röttinger (1862–1913) and Heinrich Röttinger (1866–1948). The estate of the Röttinger glass painter has been kept in the Zurich central library since 2008. [5] Heinrich Appenzeller: Röttinger, Johann Jakob .
