Leo Woerl was the son of the cartographer Joseph Edmund Woerl (1803–1865) and the Maria Herder (* 1805), a daughter of Bartholomä Herder (1774–1839), and thus a nephew of the owner of Herder’s publisher in Freiburg, Benjamin Herder (1818-1888). He learned the bookstore in Freiburg near Herder from 1858 to 1862 and, after a few years of hiking as a bookseller in Würzburg, founded his own publishing house in Würzburg (“Leo Woerl’sche Buch- und Church-Kunstverlagshandlung”, also “Leo Woerl’sche Buch, Kunst- und Verlagshandlung “;” Publisher by Leo Woerl “), whose span ranged from theological to the fiction. From 1866 to 1869 he lived in Zurich; Since the 1870s he has also maintained an agency in Vienna (Spiegelgasse 12).

The Catholic published in his Würzburger Verlag from 1868 to 1870 Franconian Volksblatt . [first] From 1874 he also operated a “Centralbureau for Catholic interests” for employment for Catholic employees. [2] From 1882 to 1891 he was also active in Würzburg as a city council.

In 1878, the publisher began with the publication of travel guides (“Woerl Reissehandbooks”), of which over 600 appeared until the turn of the century alone. The “Woerl’s travel book publisher” was moved to Leipzig in 1897, then the central German book trade city. In his publisher, a two-volume shortened version of the multi-volume of the Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria-Tuscany also appeared Die whale . [3] Woerl wrote a biography of Ludwig Salvator published in 1899. The other well-known Woerl authors included Joseph Stöckle, among others.

After Woerl left the city of Würzburg after bankruptcy in 1898 [4] the publisher was taken over by Albrecht Seemann (1863–1952) in 1920.
