Lane is an climatic health resort in the Oberharz and district of the city of Herzberg am Harz in the district of Göttingen (formerly Osterode) in Lower Saxony. He has 295 inhabitants (January 1, 2018).

Lonau is located as a dead end in the Oberharz in a small area excluded from the Harz National Park in 355 to 430 m ü. NN . South of the center of the village unite the little Lonau, which from the Mariental flows up, and the great Lonau, the one out of the Kirchtal Come to through that Lonautal Sieber-inflow Lonau flowing south to Herzberg.

The surrounding mountains are next to the mountain ridge in the field of the southwest, the Braakberg in the west and north, the kargal head in the north, the Franzoskopf and the Großer Mittelberg in the northeast, the longfast in the east, the Hirtenberg in the southeast and the large pond talk in the south . Lonau is mainly visited by hiking holidaymakers in summer, in winter by ski runners. Lonaus’s main stimuli are the Hanskühnenburg mountain restaurant, the beech forests surrounding the place, the community church, the Lonau waterfall, which is located in Herzberg and an Auerhahn enclosure. Starting from this enclosure, the Auerhuhn’s reintegration in the Harz was taken over for decades – but due to the lack of success, this project had to be stopped. However, some animals can be found in the display enclosure of the rearing station. In addition to some restaurants, a campsite, the spa park, an outdoor pool and a mini golf course are available.

At least three hiking destinations can be reached from Lonau, which are included in the system of stamps of the Harzer hiking nobility: the killing on the Schindelkopf, the Hanskühnenburg and the big tubers.

Shortly before 1592 the Lonauer Eisenhütte built, which had a blast furnace with a connected foundry system. The history of the Lonauerhammerhütte is closely linked. [3]

Lonau belonged to the Zellerfeld district. This district was dissolved on July 1, 1972. Lonau moved to the Osterode Am Harz district and was incorporated into the city of Herzberg am Harz. [4]

Meaning of the place name [ Edit | Edit the source text ]

There are two different approaches to interpret the place name Lane : [5]

  • In a document from 1260 the spelling is Ice used. The determination word Lead means young beech drive , Sprout or Zweig , while the basic word Owe or At A river valley means.
  • The place name could also be from the older water name Ludena derive, which is roughly The muddy , The loamy would mean and later transferred to the settlement.

Lonau’s coat of arms indicates the current and past as well as special features of the place. In the center of the village with the church is the confluence of the streams from the Kirchtal and the Mariental. The blue shaft oak is supposed to represent this situation. The Lonau population has chosen the Auerhahn into a heraldic animal. Not least because you have always identified yourself with the successful work of the Auerhahn growing station for the reintegration of the Auerwild in the Harz since 1972. The beech leaf is an indication of forestry and the place name (see above). Since the 13th century, iron has been controlled in Lonau for centuries until 1753. The watering trowel and hammer are reminiscent of it.

The Harz home poet Ernst Füllgrabe (1888-1971), called “Brommes”, comes from Lonau. One of his poems can be found on a board above the village at the Heuerblick.

Lonau is connected to the city center of Herzberg by bus. The district road leading from Herzberg to Lonau ends in the village.

The nearest railway access area is the Herzberg Castle stop and the Herzberg train station (Harz).
