The Maker Faires see themselves as family-friendly festivals at which DIY projects of all kinds are the focus. The program is supplemented by workshops and lectures as well as artistic performances. They offer makers an important platform to present their projects to the general public and to receive direct feedback [first] .

The “Faire” name component plays with the historical spelling “Fayre” [2] for the English word “fair” instead of “fair”. On the one hand, this happens to underline the annual character of the event and on the other hand to protect the name “Maker Faire” as a word mark. The word mark has been entered on the O’Reilly Media, Inc. since January 16, 2007.

The first German Make maker was carried out in Hanover in 2013 [3] and in 2014 oriented there again. Since 2015 it also has also taken place in Berlin. [4] The series of events experiences growing encouragement, in 2015 around 150 exhibitors and over 10,000 visitors came to Hanover [5] . Since 2016 there has been a student day in Hanover and Berlin, where only school classes (free) receive admission. In addition, regional mini maker faires are carried out, e.g. B. in Dortmund [6] and chemnitz [7] .

In April 2016, a Maker Faire in Vienna (Austria) was held for the first time. The first maker Faire took place in Switzerland in Zurich in September 2016.

Events that do not acquire a license for the use of the name “Maker Faire” from Maker Media GmbH must not use the name.

In Munich since 2013 the make Munich organized as a regional fair for southern Germany from Make Germany GmbH [8] . Hobs have also been organizing trade fairs for technology enthusiasts in the Rhine-Main area since 2014: the self-organized trade fair [9] So far, took place in Frankfurt am Main, Offenbach and Darmstadt.
