Manfred Karl Johannes Heyl was born in Friedberg/Oberhessen as the son of the student councilor Karl Heyl (1892–1970) and his wife Friderike born Jordan (1883–1973) and grew up in Worms. He received first piano lessons from his father, later he was instructed by the local music teacher and organist Lutz Heinemann (1901–1992) in organ and piano playing. In 1930 Heyl went to Mannheim and studied composition with Friedrich Eckart and piano at Willy Rehberg at the local music college. In 1933 he returned to his hometown as a freelance composer and private music teacher. In 1940 Heyl was drafted into Norway for military service and later caught French captivity. From 1946 he lived in Worms and worked as a teacher at the youth music school. When Manfred Heyl died in Worms at the age of 92, he left out an extensive compositional oeuvre, almost all genres of instrumental and vocal music.

The composer’s estate is located in the Worms City Archives.
