The Mayr-Melnhof Group is Europe’s leading producer of cardboard and folding boxes with a power papers and untracked fine papers. The MM group has 12,492 (2021) employed and generated in 2021 consolidated sales of EUR 3,069.7 million (2020: EUR 2,528.4 million). [2]

In August 2021, on the occasion of the acquisition of cardboard and paper production in Kwidzyn, Poland, the change in the division became MM Karton on MM Board & Paper communicated. [3]

In 1950, the industrial production of cardboard began with the construction of the first cardboard machine in the Frohnleiten main plant in Styria.

The Mayr-Melnhof Group was renamed the stock corporation in 1994 and brought to the Viennese stock exchange as a new emission in Vienna, where the share has been noted since then. The emission course was ATS 500 (around EUR 35).

Mm Packaging acquired 60% in 2008 at the Turkish folding box manufacturer Superpack in İzmir (Turkey). Superpack has 120 employees and has two offset printing lines with which 8,000 tons of box are processed annually. In the same year the Nikopol (Bulgaria) cardboard plant was closed. The processing of the work cost EUR 22.6 million.

In 2010 the cardboard factory in Deisswil near Stettlen (Switzerland) was closed. MM cited the emission tax introduced in Switzerland. This contradicted the Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communication (Uvek): Since the Kartonfabrik in 2008 committed itself to the CO 2 -to reduce output with various measures, be it from the CO 2 -was released. The work produced 112,000 tons of boxes in 2009 and, according to MM, was no longer competitive. A social plan has been set up for the 255 employees. In mid-2013, MM cardboard acquired the CTMP plant Folla from Södra, [6] that only in September 2012 as Southern Cell Folla had been closed due to a lack of profitability. In August 2021, the cardboard works in Baiersbronn and Eerbeek were sold to the US financial investor Oaktree Capital Management. [9]

With an annual capacity of 2.0 million tons of cardboard box, the MM Board & Paper division is the largest cardboard producer in Europe (excluding liquid box). At six European production sites (Germany, Poland, Finland, Austria and Slovenia), a diverse range of cardboard products for a wide range of operations in the packaging and food service sector is manufactured. Around 65% of the capacity is due to painted recycling box and around 35% on fresh fiber box. In addition, the division comprises an annual capacity of around 260,000 tons of power paper and 390,000 tons of untrainly fine paper. Recycling fibers that are bought externally keep a share of around 40% of the annual fiber substances. Another around 20% of the fiber use are wooden cuts, which is largely generated in the cardboard plants and in the Follacell fiber work in Norway. To which around 28% of the fiber requirement is eliminated, around 65% is generated and around 35% bought.

MM 2020/2021 completed a concentration of production on the most powerful locations. At the end of 2021, eight powerful cardboard machines and four paper machines will be produced at six locations. The machines are aimed at certain product qualities: three on recycling box, two flexibly on fresh fiber box, a recycled liner painted on white and two other cardboard machines flexibly on both recycling and fresh fiber boxes. In addition, two paper machines produce excessive fine papers and two other packaging power paper or saturating power paper.

The cardboard products of MM are used as packaging material in a variety of consumer goods markets of daily needs. The focus is on food & specialities and the area of ​​premium. Above all, force papers are sold to the food/gastronomy industry and the laminat industry, unreal fine papers, especially on paper/office needs dealers.

The division employed around 4,790 employees at the end of 2021 and generated sales of around EUR 1,561 million.

Folding box packaging for consumer goods of daily needs are at the center of MM Packaging. In 2021, around 708,000 tons of recycling and fresh fiber box and 145,000 tons of paper were processed and sales revenues of EUR 1,641.6 million were achieved. MM packaging is not only a leading folding box producer in Europe, but also one of the largest worldwide.

Geographical focus of the location network of mm packaging, consisting of 46 works in 20 countries (according to Akquisition Eson Pac and others Germany, France, England, Austria, Poland, Sweden, Denmark, Romania, Russia, Spain, Ukraine, Turkey, Tunisia, Chile, Iran, Jordan and Vietnam) is Europe. In addition, a leading position is also kept in individual countries of the Middle East, South America and the Far East. MM Packaging covers a wide industry portfolio for packaging for consumer goods of daily needs. The two markets Food & Specialities and Premium contribute to the turnover of mm packaging. The highly specialized premium business includes the areas of pharmaceutical, beauty & personal care and cigarette.

At the end of 2021, the division employed around 7,700 employees.

The majority of Mayr-Melnhof Karton AG is owned by the Mayr-Melnhof family (Goëss-Saurau). The syndicate of core shareholder families also kept around 57% of the share capital in 2021. The other 43% are in free floats and are mainly held by long -term institutional investors in Europe and the USA. In addition, family members are involved in the Mayr-Melnhof Holz Holding.
