Interview with Michael Braungart about “Cradle to Cradle”

Michael Braungart (Born February 7, 1958 in Schwäbisch Gmünd) [first] is a German process technician and chemist. Together with William McDonough, he developed the Cradle-to-Cradle concept. Braungart is a professor at the Erasmus University Rotterdam and at the Leuphana University of Lüneburg Professor of Eco-Design, [2] Managing Director of Environmental Protection Encouragement Agency Internationale Environmental Research GmbH in Hamburg (EPEA) and scientific director of the Hamburg Environmental Institute.

After studying chemistry and process engineering at the University of Konstanz and at the TU Darmstadt, Braungart received his doctorate in 1985 at the Chemistry Department of the University of Hanover. At the same time, he had been involved in building the chemistry of Greenpeace Germany since 1982, which he headed from 1985 to 1987.

In 1987 Braungart founded the EPEA Institute. With the American architect and designer William McDonough, he is also the founder of the design and development company McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC) in Charlottesville (Virginia). From 1994 to 2008 he taught material current management at the University of Lüneburg, since autumn 2008 he has been a professor for the Cradle-to-Cradle -T study at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. He also accepted a visiting professorship at the University of Virginia. Braungart is also a professor of ecodesign at the Leuphana University of Lüneburg.

Since 1994, Braungart has been talking and publishing the subjects of future -oriented “intelligent products”, development and implementation of environmental protection concepts, environmentally friendly production processes and to ecological statements.

With McDonough, he is also an author of several books in which a sustainable rethinking in the production and utilization of products according to the principle of Eco -effectiveness be challenged.

In 2003 he received the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award the US environmental authority EPA. [3]

Braungart is married to the German politician (SPD) and co -founder of Greenpeace Germany Monika Griefahn and has two daughters, a son died in 2013. [4] His daughter Nora Sophie Griefahn is the founder and board member of Cradle to Cradle Ngo. His brothers are the scientists Georg and Wolfgang Braungart.

In July 2014 he, his wife Monika Griefahn and the educator and author Philipp Möller were admitted to the Advisory Board of the Giordano Bruno Foundation. [5] In February 2020 he was the founding advisory board of the Hans Albert Institute. [6]
