A year after the Porsche 944 Turbo Cup in Germany, Porsche founded his second 944 Turbo Cup in France in 1987. This was designed based on the model of the German brand cup and organized by the French Porsche importer Sonauto in France. [first] [2]

In the racing series, professional and amateur drivers started with identical 944 turbo racing cars under the same conditions. [2]

The cup races were held on French race tracks in connection with other racing series, such as the Formula 1 World Championship, the Formula 3000 and the World Cup sports car championship. [first] [2] Between 30 and 40 vehicles took part in the championship per season. In addition to the drivers registered in the championship, guest starters were also approved, but they did not receive any championship points. [3]

The Porsche 944 Turbo Cup ran in France until 1990 and was replaced a year later by the Porsche Carrera Cup France. [2] [3]

The cup racing cars introduced in 1987 were based on the Porsche 944 Turbo.
The body corresponded to the series vehicle. However, the rear seats were removed and, instead of the series, sports fauces with 6-point belts were now installed. To protect the driver, a roll cage and a fire extinguisher was installed. [first] [2]

Only minor changes were made on the chassis. The rubber bearings of the wheel suspensions were harder and the spring and damper vote was also tighter compared to the series. The cup vehicles had also installed stronger stabilizers. The racing cars had standard tires from Dunlop in the front dimensions at the front 245/45 VR 16 to 8-inch and at the back of 255/40 VR 16 on 9-inch magnesium wheels of the “Telephone disc” type. All cup vehicles were equipped with an anti-locker system. [first] [2]

The engine with 184 kW (250 hp) and the exhaust system were identical to the series model. [first] Unlike in the German brand cup, the regulated three-way catalytic converter in the French brand cup was removed. In order to prevent manipulation on the engine control, the Bosch Motronic control unit, the sensor of the knock control and the charging pressure valve were sealed with a special film. In the last season 1990, all vehicles had installed more powerful engines that now did 213 kW (290 hp). This was achieved by an increase in the boost pressure of the turbocharger from 0.83 bar to 1.2 bar and an adjustment of the motor electronics. [2]
