Under the designation Private railway NPZ a number of Swiss shooting vehicles, control cars and intermediate cars are summarized for the formation of commuting trains, which were built for Swiss private railways between 1981 and 1992.

As with the EAV railcars, the Federal Office for Transport (EAV) depended on the orientation of federal contributions that the private railways based on their specifications, to each other, agree on the most standardized rolling material as possible so that cost savings could be achieved through joint resolutions. For this second generation of coordinated rolling material, the term “private railway NPZ” ultimately prevailed, based on the “new commuting trains (NPZ)” of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB). These were delivered to the SBB in 1984 as prototypes, from 1987 as series vehicles and lean on the slightly older private rail vehicles.

The BLS Group-consisting of the operational Bernese Alpine Railway Society Bern-Lötschberg-Simplon (BLS), the Spiez-Erlenbach-Zweismen-Bahn (SEZ), the Gürbetal-Bern-Schwarzenburg-Bahn (GBS) and the Bern-Neuenburg-Bahn (BN)-and the Bodensee-Toggenburg-Bahn (BT). The Chemins de Fer Fribourgeois Gruyère-Friborg-Morat (GFM) and the Chemin de Fer Régional du Val-de-Travers (RVT), which finally followed the EBT group, also followed this-consisting of the operating Emmental -Burgdorf-Thun-Bahn (EBT), the United Huttwil-Bahnen (VHB) and the Solothurn-Münster-Bahn (SMB).

Of the original ten railway companies that have procured private railway NPZ, none of them exist in its form at that time. The four companies in the BLS group are merged into the BLS Lötschbergbahn AG (BLS), the three companies in the EBT group to regional transport Mittelland AG (RM); Since a further merger between BLS and RM, they have been forming BLS AG today. GFM and RVT are now part of the cantonal transport companies Transports Publics Fribourgeois (TPF) or Transports Régionaux Neuchâtelois (TRN); The BT is merged with the Swiss Südostbahn (SOB) while maintaining the name of the latter.

Between 1981 and 1992 a total of 49 railcars were delivered to the ten lanes mentioned, 22 of which went to the BLS group, 13 to the EBT group, six to the BT and four each to the GFM and the RVT.

The railcars are basically designed for operation with a control car, one exception is four railcars with two driver’s cabs each, which were delivered to GFM and RVT and can be used as sole drivers; The RVT railcar 104 was sold to the GFM and inloted as a railcar 173. Triebwagen 315 (ex 105) was sold to Travys in 2013. [first]

The six railcars of the BT also have a different design that have a deep car transfer and can only be coupled with suitable cars with tunnel transition. They were delivered in fixed three -part compositions, consisting of railcars, intermediate car and control car, and Rabde 4/12 as the “Triebezug”. With the delivery of further six intermediate cars, the trains to Rabde 4/16 were extended; Since these were too long for certain operations, conventional car transitions were unilaterally upgraded on the new intermediate car, which means that surplus cars can also be used in pairs in conventional trains. With this change, the formation of fixed drifts and thus the special designation were dropped again.

Even before the private railway NPZ, this coordinated Federal Office for Transport (EAV) Grouped procurement of drive vehicles:

  • 15 high-performance engine for BT, SOB and EBT group (BDE 576)
  • 12 EAV railcars about half output for MTHB, MO, RVT, GFM and WM (today THURBO, TMR, Trn, TPF and BDWM)
  • 7 railcars low power and top speed for Sihltalbahn (today Szu) and CJ
