In response to the Russian attack on Ukraine, the National Security Council of Ukraine on March 20, 2022 was banned on all political activities of the party for the duration of the state of emergency due to the allegation of connections to the Russian Federation. [first] (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});after-content-x4With the 1991 registration year, the SPU is one of the oldest parties in independent Ukraine. It was founded according to the ban on the Ukraine Communist Party (KPU) and initially represented Orthodox Marxist positions. Oleksandr Moros has been chairman of the party since 1991. Moros was the SPU presidential candidate in the 1994, 1999 and 2004 elections and achieved third place with 13.04%, 11.29% and 5.81% of the votes. After the presidential election in 2004, he supported the later President Wiktor Juschtschenko. On July 6, 2006, Moros was elected President of the Ukrainian Parliament, the Werchowna Rada, with the support of the regions’ party, the Socialist Party and the Communist Group. After the parliamentary elections of March 26, 2006, the SPU initially negotiated with the electoral blocks Nascha Ukrajina and Blok Juliji Tymoshenko on the formation of a government coalition, but finally signed a coalition agreement with the party of the regions of Wiktor Janukovytsch and the Communist Party of Ukraine. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});after-content-x4In the 2007 parliamentary elections, the socialist party narrowly failed with 2.86% of the votes. The party crashed into a deep crisis. However, demands within the party after a resignation of Moros’ were ultimately rejected. [2] As also four other parties, the SPU appealed to the Supreme Court of Ukraine against the course of the election and complained of irregularities in the count. The official announcement of the final result was then prohibited. After the court had dealt with the investigation of the allegations, the complaint of the SPU was rejected and the way for the determination of the official end result was cleared. The eighth party congress of the SPU in November 2007 again elected Moros as the chairman. Stanislaw Nikolajenko was the only opponent to withdraw his candidacy shortly before the election. [3] In July 2010, the then Ukrainian Economic Minister Wassyl Schücko, who is considered the confidant of Wiktor Janukowytsch, was elected chairman of the SPU, Schükko held this office until August 2001. In the 2012 parliamentary elections, the SPU only reached 0.45% of the votes and thus clearly missed the entry into the Werchowna Rada. The SPU is politically positioning itself between the resurrected Communist Party and the competing social democratic parties of Ukraine. In 2003 the party had 70,000 members. [4] Since then, their political importance due to several lost elections and failure in the 2007 parliamentary elections has been significantly falling. In February 2008 it was announced that the SPU, which is stagnating in poll values at a low level, considered a union with other parties to the left of the middle. The focus here was on a merger with the United Social Democratic Party of Ukraine. After all, this project was not implemented. [5] In the early elections to the Kiev city parliament and the office of mayor, the SPU reached 0.29% of the vote. The mayor candidate Mykola Danylin supported 0.15% of voters. In view of the poor election result, Danylin, who was also chairman of the Kiev city association of the SPU, explained his exit from the party and described it as “died” and “no more as a business project by Moros and Co.” [6] In view of the possibility of renewed elections to Werchowna Rada, Oleksandr Moros called on the Ukraine Communist Party for the formation of a left election alliance in September 2008.
