Sons of the Desert (German Desert sons ) is an union of friends of the comedian duo Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. The founding meeting took place in 1965 in New York City. In the 2020s there were around 300 local associations, including seven in Germany.
The purpose of the association is to celebrate the work of Laurel and Hardy and the memory of Stan & Ollie to keep awake. [first] Her name goes back to the fictional lodge that in the film Sons of the Desert (1933) plays a role. [2]
In 1964, three years after the publication of his book Mr. Laurel and Mr. Hardy , the author and Laurel-and-Hhardy expert John McCabe (1920–2005) suggested in a letter to Stan Laurel to establish an association of friends of Laurel and Hardy with the purpose of honoring their cinematic work. Stan Laurel answered enthusiastically and immediately contributed a few thoughts to found such a association. As a motto, he proposed “Two Minds Without a Single Thought”. The cartoonist Al Kilgore created the coat of arms of the Sons of the Desert , in which the motto in Latin translation is used: Two tablets in which no document is (literally: “Two empty [slate] plates on which nothing was written”) [3]
McCabe created a fun-enormous statute ( constitution ), in which he satirized the formalities of many social organizations. [4] Stan Laurel supported the document and revised it in a humorous way; He suggested that the members should wear a FeZ or a blazer patch with the motto. [5]
On May 14, 1965, almost three months after Stan Laurel’s death on February 23, 1965, a small group of Laurel-and-Hhardy admirers met in the Lambs Club in New York City, including the actors Orson Bean and Chuck McCann , the cartoonist Al Kilgore and John Municipino, for the foundation of the Sons of the Desert to do. [6]

Others meet in a meeting room and enjoy the films on a large screen. Some tents have held meetings in local educational institutions, and some tents bring the joy of Laurel & Hardy to children’s hospitals and nursing homes. Other tent meetings are informal gatherings in private houses where snacks are passed around and Laurel & Hardy films are watched. Whatever format, the meetings focus on the Laurel & Hardy films.
