It is in cooperation with the drama school of the basement. By 1970 Jentgens, together with her husband, passed the theater alone, from 1970 until her death in 1974. The first venue of the theater was a former air-raid shelter in Cologne-Lindenthal. Hence the name “The Keller”. The opening of the theater was opened on October 11, 1955 with a performance of the Closed society by Jean-Paul Sartre. In 1954 the theater moved to the north of Cologne. From 1974 it was located in a former childbirth clinic in the South City of Cologne. Since the 2013\/14 season, the management of the theater has been subject to director Heinz Simon Keller. The schedule is characterized by contemporary plays, including many world premieres and German premieres. The pieces deal with current topics from politics and society, often with a local connection. Following the performances, there are regular discussions with the audience. There is close cooperation with the drama school of the basement. A final project is shown once per season by graduates from the school in the Theater der Keller.
