The Svendborg Sound Bridge (German Svendborgsund bridge ) is a bridge at the city of Svendborg in the south of the Danish island of Fyn (German. Fünen ), which leads via the Svendborgsund to the town of Vindeby on the small island of Tåsinge. The bridge, which was completed in 1966, was the last link that connects Funen over Siøsundbroen (1960) and Langelandsbroen (1962) to the Langeland island. [5] The Fernstraße Primærrute 9 leads over the two -lane road bridge, which is used there every day by 15,700 vehicles (as of 2009). [3]
The approximately 1220 meter long and 14 meter wide beam bridge rests on 25 iron concrete pillars. Of which are eleven in the water, [6] [5] Which makes the bridge twice as long as the sund wide. [4]
The first plans for the construction of a bridge over the Svendborgsund were submitted by Denmark’s bridge builder Anker Engelund in 1938. His design, which provided a 950 meter long arch bridge, could initially be realized due to the outbreak of the Second World War. But when the alternative between a bridge and a tunnel solution was discussed in the early 1960s, his plans were taken up again after his death in 1961 and continued by the engineers J. Hannemann and Poul Møller Nielsen. The decision was made in favor of a bar bridge because it would fit into the landscape more harmoniously using a slim pillar. After three years of construction, the building was finally inaugurated on November 18, 1966 by the then crown princess and today’s Danish Queen Margrethe II. [6] [4]
