The Troodos Mountains , also Troodos ( Greek Terrode , Turkish Trodos Mountains ) lies on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. The highest elevation is the Olympos (also called Chionistra) at 1952 m. The mountains are of volcanic origin and, like the Pentadactylo, – in contrast to the rest of the island. Even in midsummer, there is a pleasantly mild climate in the Troodos Mountains that invites you to hike.

The Troodosgebirge extends in the southwestern state of Cyprus, between the villages of Pomos and Panagia in the Paphos district and east to Stavrouvofi in the Larnaka district.

The following summits are to be mentioned next to the Olympos: Madari (1613 m), Papousta (1554 m), Kionia (1423 m), Tripylos (1362 m) and Kykkos (1318 m).

In the mountains, all important rivers arise from Cyprus, including the diaries, Ezousa, Gialias and the Kouris.

Troodos is the most thoroughly researched ophiolithic mountain massif in the world. Like hardly any other mountains, it has influenced the geological theories about the creation of the oceans and the lithospheric plates. [first]

Around 90 million years ago, created at the bottom of a huge ocean, the ophiolithic massif today forms the foundation of the island and thus also the Troodo. So-called Plutonite-crystallization products from depths of two to six kilometers below the bottom of the original Ocean-can be found frequently. They include crystals with various mineral components such as olivines, pyroxen and plagioclase.

Today, Ausraumhalden from the mining testifier, which played an important role in Troodos a few years ago. Asbestos, among others at Pani Amiantos, and chrome were broken down here until the 1980s.

In 2015, the region of the geopark was certified with the UNESCO Global Geopark label due to its geological uniqueness. [2]

Productive rainfall of 700 to 1000 mm a year are characteristic of the Troodos. In the winter months between January and March, the summit region of the Olympus is often deeply cut.

In the Troodos-the “Black Forest” Cyprus-the endemic alder leafy oaks and aleppo pine, pine, plane trees, cedar and oaks grow. On the flat sloping edges of the Troodo, the natural flora was largely displaced by apple, pear, peach, almond and walnut trees as well as wine slopes.

The mountains have a species-rich wildlife with eagles, foxes and the last free-living Cyprus muffle.

In the Troodos Mountains there are larger and smaller villages, including Agros, Kakopetria, Kaminaria, Louvaras, Moutoullas, Pedoulas, Phini, Trimiklini and Prodromos, the highest island of Cyprus.

The mountain villages house numerous churches painted with Byzantine frescoes, some of which are built as a barn roof church. Ten of these churches are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site in the area of Troodos. There are also several monasteries there. The Kykkos monastery is the richest. Agios Nikolaos Tis Stegis, Chrysorrouiatissia and the Trooditisa monastery are also known.

The Troodos Mountains are part of several national and international protected areas. At the national level, the Troodos National Park was shown in 1992 [3] . The National Park was also reported as a European bird sanctuary and as a FFH area and is therefore part of the European Natura 2000 protection area network [4] . The nature reserves of Chionistra and Dasos Troodous are also located within the Troodos Mountains. The area from the Troodos Mountains to the southwest coast is also a “area of exceptional natural beauty” (Greek: Areas of excellent natural beauty ) protected [5] .

Hike [ Edit | Edit the source text ]

In the national park, four hiking trails are signposted to study nature. Tables on the edge of the path provide explanations of flora, geology and ecology.

  • “Artemis” – circular around Chionistra; about seven kilometers, 2.5 hours
  • “Atalante” – from the post office in Troodos to Chrommine; about nine kilometers, 3.5 hours
  • “Kaledonia” – from Kryos Potamos to the Kaledonia waterfalls; about two kilometers, 1.5 hours
  • “Pershone” – in the area around Makria Kontarka; about three kilometers, 1.5 hours

Starting from the village of Troodos, a 15 -kilometer hiking trail leads around the summit of the Olympus.
