Valkenswaard lies between Eindhoven and the Lommel lying in Belgium. The street between these cities has not been expanded into a highway because it runs through natural areas outside the village. A new ring road leads around the center, through the exterior quarters of Valkenswaard.
Valkenswaard has a beer brewery (Dommelsch), a cigar factory and some small businesses; Due to the beautiful, forested surroundings and the many cafés and discotheques, tourists also come here. The Center Parc is located a few kilometers south of Westerhoven The Kempervennen .
The majority of residents are commuters who work in Eindhoven or Hasselt (Belgium). In both cities there are works by the Philips Group.
In the Middle Ages, the poor farming village of Wedert was created here (or Explanation Racing because the local farmers lived from pig breeding; Lower Varken = Brab. Die dialect = pig). In the 17th century, the village became a center of the Falkner, which were able to catch many of these birds of prey here. A statue in the center of Valkenswaard is still reminiscent of this. Between around 1850 and 1940, the place knew a flowering cigar industry. On September 17, 1944, it was largely destroyed in acts of war. Only the two largest companies (“Hofnar” and “Willem II”) were able to prove themselves for a few decades after the end of the war. The village grew strongly through the influx of other small industries, also because the Philips-Werke employees could be built here.
