Westermarsch I was an independent community in Lower Saxony until the municipal reform in 1972 and as such association member of the Leybucht community. Today Westermarsch I is a district of the East Frisian city of north with 396 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2022), [first] which are spread over an area of ​​19.42 km². [2]

The name Westermarsch I On the one hand, marks the landscape of the place (march) and, on the other hand, refers to its location in the western Norderland region (see Ostermarsch). The Roman number on behalf of the place distinguishes the former municipal community from neighboring Western March II.

WESTERMARSCHE I is characterized by the large -scale agriculture as a place of marsh. In addition to the isolated Gulfhöfen, there are several settlement cores in the local area. These include middle march, Altendeich and Westermarscherloog.

Westermarsch I borders in the east to the city of north and in the north on Westermarsch II. The North Sea coast forms the natural border in the west and the watercourse of the Norder low and the Norder district of Neuwestel in the south.

State road 27 connects Westermarsch I to the city of north and Greetsiel. Kreisstraße 214 leads from Westermarsch I to Norddeich.

With the integration of the so -called Westermarscher New country was in 1425 with the construction of the Fokko-Ukena-Deiches began. Until then, as everywhere in the marching areas of human hands, the residents of the New country in front of the sea.

The most important written document for the history of the place is that Altendeicher School chronicle whose oldest parts come from 1622 and which, in addition to the development of the school, also deal with the history of the place.   • Around 1771, a large cattle disease was rampant in Westermarsch, which led to great economic hardship for the approximately 600 inhabitants of the village.
  • A brick factory with an oven capacity of around 20,000 stones was built on today’s district road 214 in 1774. It existed until the 1970s. A sugar song was also built three years later.
  • After a dike break in 1825, large parts of the place were devastated.
  • A first real transport connection of the Western march to the city of north took place between 1873 and 1875. Until then, due to the poor way conditions, the small and larger watercourses were used as transport routes.

On July 1, 1972, the municipality of Westermarsch I was incorporated into the city of north. [3]

Well over 90% of the Western March population belong to the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Andreas-Kirchengemeinde, Gottfried-Keller-Straße. About 3% are members of Evangelical Freikirchen. Around 1% are Catholics. Church buildings are not available in Western March I. The various church members have always been looked after from the north. Services were carried out in the meeting place for several years. A group of women meets regularly there.

The AWO daycare center is located next to the meeting place in a former school.

An even older school that became a nationwide bar after closure is now revealed to decay. [4]
