A teat is usually cylindrical and elongated. It consists of a cavity (cistern), into which the details of several mammary glands mend together and one or more teats on the teat openings ( Ostia papillaria ). The teat of skin tissue is enveloped, which forms both the cistern and the teat as a duplicature.

The nipples of the primates do not represent real teats. For them, the details result directly in an increase in the skin, which is referred to as “nipple”. [first]

The teats of the mammals are paired and can differ greatly with regard to their location in the different groups of animals.

As a rule, they are in pairs along a abdominal, paired milk bar, which ranges from the chest to the groin region. This form of localization is referred to as a thoraco -inguinal and, for example, is present in most mammals such as rodents, insect eaters, most predators and some hoof animals such as the pigs. For some mammals such as the primates, bears or the elephants, the teats are limited to the chest (mammary glands), one speaks of a thoracic location. In ruminants and horses in particular, the teats concentrate on the groin area (ingredient location) and form a udder here.

The number of teats is adapted to the average throwing size in mammals. As a rough rule of thumb, the number of teats of the double average number of young animals corresponds.

The number of teats and the distribution of the teats to pectoral and inginal pairs of teats can be described by the so -called teat formula. [2] In addition to the spelling listed below, 2-2 = 8 is also in the literature [3] or 2+2 = 8 used.

  • Examples:
    • 0/2 = 4 – There are no pectorals and two inginal pairs of teats, i.e. 4 teats.
    • 1/1 = 4 – There is a pectoral and an inguinal pair of teats, i.e. 4 teats.
    • 2/0 = 4 – There are two pectorals and no inginal pairs of teats, i.e. 4 teats.
    • 3/2 = 10 – There are three pectorals and two inginal pairs of teats, i.e. 10 teats.

The teats serve in all mammals of the efficient food supply for young people. In contrast to the toilet animals, in which the milk leakage takes place through a milk field in the fur and the young animals have to lick the escaping milk, the teats offer the young animals a direct suction area that they can put in their mouths and from which they suck milk if necessary can.
