As a Pan-European company, Capio acts across borders in terms of geographical markets and the medical departments. Inpatient hospital care accounts for 90 percent of the sales of the group and includes pension benefits, etc. in the areas of internal medicine, intensive care medicine, surgery, phlebology, urology, gynecology and orthopedics. The group of companies is also active in the areas of oncology, psychiatry and rheumatology as well as in other medical fields.

The Capio Group was founded in 1994 as the daughter of the investment company Bure Equity. In the following years, the company expanded to Norway, Great Britain, France and Germany. [4]

From 2000 to 2006 Capio was listed on the Stockholm stock exchange.

Capio Germany was created in 2006 by taking over Deutsche Klinik GmbH by its private owners. Sigurd Gawinski, founding partner of Deutsche Klinik GmbH, became managing director of Capio Deutsche Klinik GmbH.

Further acquisitions were carried out from 2006 to 2008. Capio Germany included 2008 in Bavaria (Aschaffenburg, Bad Brückenau, Bad Kötzting, Laufen), Hessen (Büdingen), Lower Saxony (Dannenberg, Otterndorf), North Rhine-Westphalia (Hilden), Rhineland-Palatinate (Bad Bertrich) and Thuringia (Uhlstädt- Kirchhasel). The two Apax and Nordic Capital funds took over the listed diagnostic group Unilabs SA (radiology and laboratories, seat in Switzerland) after a takeover offer in 2007. Unilabs was taken by the stock exchange. The merged group was split off under the name Unilabs and sold to a third APAX fund (Apax IX) in 2016.

Capio Spain was sold back by CVC Capital Partners in 2011 and got the previous name IDC back. [5]

In 2014, the Capio Group employed 12,357 employees. 4.6 million patients visited their facilities. The net annual turnover in 2014 was around € 1.4 billion. Of these, 54% of Capio Nordic with Sweden and Norway, 37% on Capio France and 9% of Capio Germany.

In 2015, the two Apax and the Nordic Capital funds rose from their remaining capio investment with their own IPO. [5]

In 2015, Capio Germany sold the clinic in Bad Kötzting to the Luitpold Clinic, also based in Bad Kötzting and the clinic in Thuringia in 2017 at the Australian listed laboratory group Sonic Healthcare. In summer 2018, the French health group Ramsay Générale de Santé, daughter of the Australian hospital group Ramsay Health Care, announced that they want to buy Capio inclusive Capio Germany. In October 2018, Capio shareholders accepted the takeover offer. After Ramsay Santé controlled more than 98 percent of the voting rights, Capio was taken from the stock exchange on November 28, 2018. The Deutsche Klinik GmbH was founded in Bad Brückenau in 1979. First of all, the company worked in hospital advice. Since 1996, hospitals, rehabilitation facilities and care centers have been managed either in possession or management as Deutsche Klinik GmbH. On September 4, 2006, the partners at the time transferred their company shares to the Swedish hospital group Capio. The previous institutions of society were fully preserved in Germany.

From 2007 the Capio Deutsche Klinik GmbH active on the German health market as a private sponsor. The Germany headquarters of Capio was in Fulda. In 2014, Capio Germany employed 1,320 employees and 204.6 thousand patients attended the 20 institutions at 11 locations. Capio Deutsche Klinik GmbH’s net annual turnover in 2014 was around € 120 million.

Ramsay dismantled Capio Germany in October 2020. It sold the clinics and MVZ in Bad Brückenau, Dannenberg and Otterndorf to Sigurd Gawinski and André Eydt. [5] [8]

After approval by the Federal Cartel Office on October 1, 2020, the Dutch Clinic Association Bergman Clinics, headquartered in Naarden, bought the remaining six clinics (Aschaffenburg, Büdingen, Hilden, Bad Bertrich, Laufen-Abtsee and the Eye Clinic University Allele in Bremen) from Capio. Bergman Clinics has been owned by the Dutch private equity company NPM Capital since 2018 and focuses on institutions with the “offer of high-quality planable treatments”. [5] [9] [ten] [11]
