Rolf von Nordenskjöld (Born December 7, 1957 in Berlin) is a German jazz saxophonist (baritone), flutist, arranger, composer and big band leader.

Nordskjöld grew up in Zeuthen near Berlin and studied saxophone and flute from 1979 to 1983 at the University of Music “Hanns Eisler”. After completing his studies, he taught at this university until 2007 and perceived a visiting professorship in 1991–1993. From 1983 to 1985 he was a member of the orchestra of the Friedrichstadtpalast. In addition, Nordenskjöld played in the Dieter-Echt-Big-Band and in the Saxophone Quartet Berlin, from which the ‘Leipzig Saxophone Quartet under the direction of Bernd Brückner emerged. In 1999 this quartet played the CD Passages MIT composition von Nordenskjöld Ein.

Because of his affinity for jazz, he founded the Rolf von Nordenskjöld quartet in 1990 and published the CD in 1993 No man’s land .

In 1995 he launched his Rolf von Nordenskjöld Orchestra. To date, the Big Band published four CDs and presented itself in over 80 concerts. Her first CD came in the same year Out of the Past out, followed Live in Berlin , Berlin Sketchbook as well as the current CD Added time in the no man’s land . At the latter live recording, the play “no man’s land” should be emphasized, in which Karola Elßner plays the instrument Duduk, which is rarely heard in big bands. The band also accompanied singers such as Bill Ramsey, Gitte Hænning, Paul Kuhn, Georgie Fame and played with Ack van Royen and the Jazz Mundharmonika player Hendrik Meurkens. Instead of trombone, the big band was occupied for some recordings with unusual instruments such as tuba and euphonium.

In the years 1996 to 2000, Nordenskjöld was a constant guest at the Rias-Bigband and participated in numerous recordings of the orchestra. After the death of Helmut Brandt (2001), Rolf von Nordenskjöld took over his band and published the CD in 2003 Long Distance .

In 2006 and 2007, Nordenskjöld took over the management of the Big Band of the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Robert Schumann-Philharmonie Chemnitz (see discography).

With his saxophone quartet (Friedemann Matzeit, soprano saxophone; Uli Kempendorff, tenor saxophone; Nico Lohmann, AltSaxophon), he took the CD in 2004 Four in a row and went on Mexicotour in the same year. The quartet has been expanded by the Saxophonist Birgitta Flick (tenor) since 2015.

In 2002 Nordenskjöld founded the duo with the cellist Danuta Jacobasch Doublewood (CD of the same name at Bit 2006). Since 1997 he has also been playing in the duo with bass player Marc Muellbauer (CD Sleepwalk ). In Friedhelf Schönfeld’s new quartet founded in 2011, Nordenskjöld Baritonsaxophone, bass flute, piccolo and double bass clarinet (see discography).

Since 2001 he has been teaching at the HMT “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” Leipzig and has headed the university Big band there. In 2019 he was appointed honorary professor.
