Metabols is a work for Henri Dutilleux orchestra. Commissioned to the composer by the conductor George Szell in 1959, on the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of his orchestra, it was composed in 1963-64, then created the January 14, 1965 by the Cleveland orchestra, led by the sponsor George Szell. . The term of metabolian is used in rhetoric to designate the repetition of an idea with different words and expressions. In the lexicon of biology, it designates the metamorphosis, generally slow and progressive, of a living organism, for example that of a caterpillar turning into a butterfly [ first ] . In his work, Dutilleux thus presents, in each of the parts, which are linked without cuts, one or more musical ideas to whom it undergoes successive transformations, until the idea becomes a truly different motive. This transformed motif then becomes the guiding idea of the next part, and the process starts again. The five parts of metabols give the primacy successively to the woods, the ropes, the percussion, the brass, and finally to all the instruments present [ 2 ] . Dutilleux considers as a requirement that these five parts cannot be separated and will always be played in each other. 1. Incantatory . The first reason begins with a hammered appeal agreement, a “bell agreement” according to Angèle Leroy, then continues in a short slow theme, around an increased quarter, and in the form of an incantation or chanting. This closet agreement regularly returns throughout the first room, like a chorus in a Rondo shape. Even if the motif gives importance to the treble, it travels all the height space from the Mi of the double bass to the mid of the piccolo, it is gradually transformed, by the trumpets then by the strings and it is accompanied by ornaments Developed flutes, piccolos, oboe, English horn, clarinettes, violins. He returns at the end close the first part [ 2 ] . 2. Linear . The second part involves mainly the strings, in a slow and majestic polyphony, sometimes accompanying a solo, and where the voices are divided more and more so far as to make 14 different parts heard, thus showing moments of tension. Dutilleux considered this part to be a lied. 3. Obsessive . The transition with the third part is made with a motif of twelve sounds in pizzicato to the double bass. Then the third part takes place as a kind of quick passacaille, that is to say by making a theme heard that returns in an obstinate way. This time it is the brass that dominates. 4. Torpide . The fourth piece involves percussion and is organized around an agreement of six sounds, repeated in any way, instrumentation, arrangement in the sound space. . 5. Flamboyant . The final piece is in the form of a scerzo, fast and powerful which requests the whole orchestra and takes up all the elements of the previous parts [ 2 ] , [ 3 ] , [ 4 ] . Metabols is considered a pivotal work in the career of Dutilleux, and according to the musicologist Jérémy Thurlow, would even open a new path with him, a meeting between two paradigms, one characteristic of inorganic (discontinuity, sudden change) and the another, more organic, showing the composer’s fascination for very graduated changes, resemblances, memories, premonitions [ 5 ] . The situation of Dutilleux in the face of dodecaphonism present at the time when he composed (that of Pierre Boulez, for example) is not easy to apprehend. It is indeed considered to be very independent vis-à-vis this movement. However Metabols shows a central and sophisticated dodecaphonic thought, and there are the most rigorous processes that this composition technique can offer, at the level of the heights, but also having implications in harmony [ 6 ] . The work is played by two piccolos, two flutes, three oboe, an English horn, two clarinets (in if downside), a small clarinet in mi flat, a low clarinet, three bassons, a double bass, four horns, four trumpets, Three trombones, a snorkel, a harp, strings. The percussion involves three percussionists, and include four timpani, an Xylophone and a Glochenspiel [ 2 ] . Its duration of execution is approximately 17 minutes. Having been part of the Aristophil collections, the autograph manuscript of Metabols is classified national treasure by the French Ministry of Culture, then pre -empted by the National Library of France during one of the auctions of the Society, the June 20, 2018 , for the sum of 143,000 euros [ 7 ] .
