Guangzhou Peugeot Automobile Company (GPAC) is a joint venture between Peugeot And Guangzhou Automobile having been active between 1985 and 1997   The joint venture is created in March 1985 [ first ] . Peugeot and Guangzhou assemble in Guangzhou (canton, in China) the Peugeot 504 Pick-up, joined in 1987 by the break and the four-door sedan as well as the Peugeot 505 in CKD. Production is 3,000 cars in 1987 [ 2 ] and 20,800 cars in 1993 [ 3 ] . Political rivalries between Beijing and Guangzhou, as well as the inexperience of the partner, the obsolescence of the proposed models and the naivety of the French management, lead to the failure of the joint venture [ 4 ] . In 1993, the State Development Commission decided that joint ventures not reaching 150,000 units produced in 1997 will be abandoned. Guangzhou-Peugeot is far from the lens and the lion brand throws in the towel with 1.6 billion yuan of debts. The shares that the French brand has in the joint venture are sold to the Japanese manufacturer Honda to form Guangzhou-Honda. The PSA group then maintains its presence in China through Citro\u00ebn, the chevrons brand having knotted a joint venture with the Chinese manufacturer Dongfeng. The name of this joint venture is Shenlong. In English, the joint venture is called Dongfeng Citro\u00ebn Automobile Company, who will become Dongfeng Peugeot-Citro\u00ebn Automobiles in 2002 in order to prepare the return of the Peugeot brand in China [ 5 ] . The Peugeot 405 was also to be assembled by GPAC, but the industrialization of the model never took place [ 4 ] .
