This player-player was created by Gary Gygax just a few months after the start of the gygax campaign in Faucongris and is consequently one of the oldest characters constantly associated with Dungeons and Dragons . When Gygax was forced to leave TSR, he lost the creative control of Mordenkaïne. TSR then made Mordenkaïnen a powerful mage with solid convictions opposed to moral absolute, at the same time as the chief of the circle of eight, a cabale of eight powerful magicians. In the works of fiction associated with Faucongris world , he played both the role of protagonist and antagonist. Official publications of Faucongris world are sometimes in contradiction with each other with regard to Mordenkaïnen. However, there is no doubt that this is an important figure in the fictional history of the flanss. At the end of 1972, Gary Gygax created Castel Gryffalc and his underground passages. After a few months almost non-stop during which he played the role of the playmaker [ first ] , Gygax asks one of his players, Rob Kuntz , to share the function of Master of Dungeon with him, in order to be able to experience the game as a player. At the beginning of 1973, following this decision, Gygax created several characters, including a magician of first is level [ 2 ] . Gygax is interested in Finnish mythology and baptizes the sorcerer ” Morse cats “, a suitcase of mythical heroes Mordecai and Lemminkäinen [ 3 ] . This character will become the most famous of those of gygax and also his favorite [ 4 ] . Over several years of play, mainly from 1973 to 1985, Gygax played adventures and developed the character traits with which Mordenkaïnen will now be associated, while going up the magician at the “Twenty-and-some-something level” [ 5 ] . During this period, Gygax brings together Mordenkaïnen to eight of his other characters to form the Eight Circle [ 6 ] , [ 7 ] , [ 8 ] . Throughout his life, Gygax will never reveal any of the original characteristics of Mordenkaïne [ 9 ] . When in 1985 Gygax was forced to leave TSR, he lost the rights to most of the characters he had mentioned in TSR publications, including Mordenkaïnen [ ten ] . Following his departure, TSR changes Mordenkaïnen in a way that his creator had not planned. When the Faucongris campaign decor is reissued during the supplement ” From the Ashes ” [ 11 ] , Mordenkaïnen is reshaped and becomes the most powerful magician in the world. The circle of eight is now described as a cabal of eight magicians under the supervision of Mordenkaïne, who seeks the balance between the forces of good and those of evil. Mordenkaïnen is one of the most famous mages whose spells are included in the book ” Greyhawk Adventures ” [ twelfth ] . The name of Mordenkaïnen is used to describe various spells published for the magic system of Dungeons and Dragons . The characteristics of Mordenkaïnen for AD&D are published for the first time in the supplement ” The Rogues Gallery (1980); Later, Gary Gygax will never have given Brian Blume , the author of the supplement, the slightest information on the magician and will insist on the fact that Blume was forced to invent the published characteristics [ 13 ] . Variations on the characteristics of Mordenkaïnen for AD&D will also be published in ” Mordenkaïnen’s Fantastic Adventure (1984), ” The City of Greyhawk “(1989) and” Epic Level Handbook “(2002). It is also mentioned in the following publications: ” Expedition to the Ruins of Greyhawk “(2007). The series of articles ” The Wizards Three “published in Dungeon Magazine ” Mordenkaïnen’s Magnificent Emporium ” (Wizards of the Coast, 2011). Mordenkaïnen appears in good place in the parodic adventure ” Castle Greyhawk “(1988), in which he heads a film studio, which is a possible reference to the position of Gary Gygax as a Hollywood correspondent at TSR and that he worked on the cartoon” Dragon’s smile “And other projects. Carl Sargent, Erik Mona and Gary Holian, authors who worked on Faucongris, suggest that Mordenkaïnen was born in 509 ac. We do not know his place of birth, but before occupying the pre -eminent place which was his in the early 560s, we think he resided on the wild coast. He also lived for a time in the Franche city of Faucongris, as well as in Maison-Haute. According to some rumors, it is of the eidelly lineage, perhaps even ærdien. Some claim that he would be the descendant of Ganz Yragerne, the first Landgraf of the Sélintane, which would mean that he would be appeared to Zagig and Heward. According to some sources, it would be related from afar at one of the royal houses of the Grand-Royle of ærdie, the Crandaine house. Around the year 561 AC, with his young apprentice Bigby, the warriors Robilar and Yrag, the clerics Riggby and Serten, the Otis Ranger, and his colleague Mage Tenser, Mordenkaïne forms the eight citadel. The group is named after the Citadel of Obsidian, the fortified place of Mordenkaïnen in the Yetils mountains. The citadel dissolves after the Battle of the Plains of Emridida in 569 AC, during which Serten loses his life. Two years later, Mordenkaïnen formed the circle of the eight, a cabale of eight magicians of which he is the ninth member and where he plays the role of chief and gray eminence. Mordenkaïnen believes that the Citadel’s failure was due to its composition. He thinks that the group he plans can only succeed if its members are “intellectual men and gifted with magic talents, whose main interests are other than material”. Role and philosophy [ modifier | Modifier and code ] The role of Mordenkaïnen in the campaign setting of Faucongris is that of a man who alone performs peacekeeping functions. It operates according to a theory based on the balance of powers and neutrality, trying to prevent both the good as the evil from winning. His methods are those of a manipulator and he prefers to pull the strings in the shade. L’ Atlas of Greyhawk said about Mordenkaïnen: “The Bordenkaïne Archmage founded the Eight Circle with the aim of making it a tool for manipulating the different political factions of Flannæsse, in order to preserve the delicate balance of powers and maintain the area in a stable state. Its vision of the “” imposed neutrality “Is not of the type” A loan for a rendering “, But rather a detailed theoretical philosophy, from decades of mysterious research. Mordenkaïnen recently fought with ardor for the forces of good, especially during the Great War, but it also happened to him in the past to shelter much darker plans to achieve his ends [ 14 ] “. Description [ modifier | Modifier and code ] Mordenkaïnen seems much younger than it is actually, about forty years. It is large, of average build and often wears black, blue or gray. His beard, carved as a goat, carries two remarkable white wicks; The shape of the latter has changed over the years and if it is today narrow and sharp, it originally wore a complete beard which covered all the chin. His graying hair once came to him at the height of the shoulders, but for 591 ac, he shaves his skull and cut the barbichette in a point. He speaks in a deep and melodious voice. When he travels, Mordenkaïnen frequently disguises himself as a poor elderly merchant. Mordenkaïne can be stubborn and not very cooperative, and he can’t stand fools. He usually spends more time listening than to speak, but when he does, his declarations are authoritarian and rarely questioned. As a major figure in Flannesse, Mordenkaïne was dealt with by almost all the other characters in the “world of falogris”. His enemies are evard, Iuz, Rary, Terik and Sire Robilar; His allies are Heward, Murlynd, Zagyg, Jallarzi Sallavarian, Otto, Ravel Dasinder and Dault, the minor god. He is closely related to Heward, Zagyg and Bigby; The latter was also his apprentice. The series of articles ” Wizards Three Mention that Mordenkaïnen is associated with Elminster of the campaign setting of the forgotten kingdoms and Dalamar of the dragonlance campaign setting, and that they all come together on earth to exchange news and magic formulas. It is also said that he has an apprentice named Rautheene. The citadel of Mordenkaïne is defended by humans, dwarfs, and gnomes. The mage is also combined with various giants. Mordenkaïnen is a powerful magician and a manipulative and influential politician. He has many allies in the Franche-Franche of Faucongris and his influence extends in the distance. He has developed a number of spells, all of which include the name Morse cats . We know that he is the author of (or the co -author) of the following diegetic works: Architecture (with Léomund) Mordenkaïne’s Codex Cosmogony of magnetic fluids The dark side of memory Epic saga of the great conjurers Ascension of magic art and modernity The weapons of ether (with MELF) Bibliography [ modifier | Modifier and code ] Bailey, Robin Wayne – Night Watch (TSR, 1990).
