XIX It is century [ modifier | Modifier and code ] The first chief doctor of the hospital is the D r Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Recordon. THE D r Marc Dufour became a deputy doctor in 1869. The December 15, 1873 , he inaugurates the new building from the ophthalmic hospital, which includes 40 beds. He succeeds D r Record at the head of the hospital in 1880. The D r Dufour is also a member of the commission appointed in the fall of 1887 by the Council of State to study the transformation of the academy into a university and to create a faculty of medicine. The D r Marc Amsler, born in Vevey in 1891, succeeded him in 1935 as a teacher of ophthalmology and chief doctor of the ophthalmic hospital. By acquiring devices and working instruments, it gives a significant boom to the hospital. In November 1940 , the 1873 building was enlarged and restored. In 1943 the D r Marc Amsler leaves Lausanne for Zurich [ first ] . His successor at the head of the hospital and as a professor at the university, in 1944, was the D r Bernardo Streiff, born in Genoa in 1908. He created in 1948 the Department of Orthoptic, taking care of the strabics in particular. He proposed to the foundation council, in agreement with the canton, to renovate the hospital and to build a new building west of the first. The new premises of the ophthalmological clinic are inaugurated the May 20, 1954 . In 1949, he created the Streiff fund in order to acquire devices and instruments necessary for specialized research.
