Son of Rupert, count of Virnebourg, and nephew of Henri II of Virnebourg, Archbishop of Cologne, he was appointed by Pope John XXII, the October 11, 1328 , at the Archbishopric of Mainz, of which he was canon at the same time as Provost of Bonn. But when Henri presented himself to Mainz, the clergy refused to receive him, and called his appointment to the better informed Pope. The case was pleaded for three years, at the court of Avignon. However, the canons of Mainz, fearing that a long vacancy of their siege would be detrimental to this church, named to administer it, Baudouin, archbishop of Trier. The pope highly disapproved of this party, and persisted until the end in this arrangement, without being flexed by the letters that the kings of France and Bohemia had written to him to urge him to maintain Baudouin in his administration. Benoît XII, successor to John XXII, was also inexorable, so that at the end Baudouin, threatened with excommunication, took the party to hand over the government of the Church of Mainz to the good pleasure of the Pope: in a letter to the pope Benoît, dated November 12, 1336 , he protests the purity of his intentions when he accepted this commission, which had been offered to him, he said, by the chapter and the vassals of the Church of Mainz. In 1337, after the voluntary resignation of Baudouin, Henri de Virnebourg was admitted, of the consent of all orders, and put in possession of the Archbishopric of Mainz. We just imposed on him, according to the columnist Albert the Strazebourg , two conditions which he accepted: one, which he would attach to the Emperor Louis IV of the Holy Empire; the other, which he would put in the hands of the chapter the fortified places and the cities dependent on his church. Henri legislates without delay: to reconcile the bourgeois, he had promulgated the April 3, 1329 A decree by which he promised not to remove any tax or toll, at the distance of a thousand around Mainz, without the consent of the city. The following year, he abandoned the proceedings against residents for damage and violence against members of the clergy. In 1331, he freed them from the oath made to the Jews, to reimburse them in certain terms the money borrowed from wear. Faithful to the commitments he had made with the chapter, he depressed, shortly after his enthronement, the bishop of CEO and Gerlier, count of Nassau, to ask Pope Benedict XII the absolution of the Emperor. In the month of July 1338 , in the assembly of the seven voters in Rentz, he vigorously supported the interests of this prince; And, having then accompanied him to Frankfurt, he drawn up, in concert with these same voters, a letter to the pope to establish the rights of the Empire against the claims of Rome. At the head of the letter Henri thus indicates his titles: “Henri, Archbishop of Mainz, archichancelier of the Holy Roman Empire, in Germany, and dean of princes-electors [ first ] . » Pope Clément VI, by his bubble of April 30, 1344 , divided the ecclesiastical province of Mainz by erecting the church of Prague in archbishopric [ 2 ] . The 5th of May Following, by another bubble, he overwhelmed the Archbishop of Mainz, by granting the diocese of Prague the right to crowd and crown the King of Bohemia. So shortly after Henri de Virnebourg Congratia the projects of the sovereign pontiff: Clément VI having had the peace articles he consented to the Emperor, in writing, the Archbishop of Mainz assembled the voters in Frankfurt to deliberate, and on his opinion, all agreed to reject them [ 3 ] ; But the archbishop soon had to repent of this one. Discontent in turn of a decree rendered by the emperor at his expense in favor of the Palatine counts, he wanted in vain to return to the good graces of the Holy Father: they were put at so high prices that he better resorted to those of the emperor, who were granted to him without conditions. Clément VI then no longer took any precaution with Henri: after having excommunicated him publicly in 1345, he placed it April 7 of the following year, and appointed Gerlier de Nassau in his place. Henri took no account of his testimony, and continued for about eight years to be worn for Archbishop of Mainz, and to do the functions of it [ 4 ] . Gerlier, for his part, wanted to support his appointment, and from there a schism in the church of Mainz and the wars between the two competitors. Henri, however, by the Emperor’s Council, agreed to give the administration of his church to three canons, subject to an income of 1,000 Silver Marcs . Henri made, in 1348, the function of voter by creating King of the Romans Édouard III of England, in concert with those of his colleagues who had opposed the election of Charles de Luxembourg, made the previous year. We still see him give his suffrage in the election of Frédéric, margrave of Mistie, then, in 1349, to that of Gunther de Schwarzburg (Schwarzburg’s house). The authors of Gallia christian a letter from this prelate, written, in 1351, to King Philippe de Valois. Henri died on December 21, 1353 and was buried in the crypt of the Saint-Martin de Mainz cathedral [ 5 ] . Notes [ modifier | Modifier and code ] ↑ According to Gaul Christian , vol.
