Fran\u00e7ois-R\u00e9gis Clet , born the August 19, 1748 In Grenoble in Dauphin\u00e9, killed the February 18, 1820 , is a Catholic priest, Lazarist, missionary in China, recognized martyr and saint by the Catholic Church.   Fran\u00e7ois-R\u00e9gis is the thirteenth of the fifteen children of the C\u00e9saire Clet and Claire (or Claudine) Bourquy (or Bourquis), of the maternal family of Henri Beyle (Stendhal). One of his sisters becomes Carmelite, and one of his brothers becomes Chartreux. He begins his studies at Grenoble college. At his request, he continued them with Lazarists in Lyon, with whom he entered the seminar in 1769 [ first ] , [ 2 ] . He made a religious profession by pronouncing his wishes of Lazarist him 18 mars 1771 . Brother Fran\u00e7ois-R\u00e9gis Clet is ordained a priest two years later, the 27 mars 1773 . He was then a professor of morality for fifteen years, at the great seminary of Annecy, where he is nicknamed “itinerant library”. In 1788, he was responsible by his colleagues to represent them at the General Assembly of the priests of the mission; The new superior chooses him as responsible for the great seminar and the parent company of Lazarists [ first ] , [ 2 ] . Father Clet asked in 1791 to go on a mission. His request is granted, thanks to the opportunity of a boat leaving for Macao and a defection; He embarked in Lorient the April 10, 1791 for China [ first ] , [ 2 ] . He arrives in Macao the October 15, 1791 And stayed there for a few months. He then went, disguised, in the Kiang-Si region (Jiangxi), where he is the first European missionary. He cannot learn the local language, and hardly supports the climate. He left in 1793 for Hou-Kouang (located between Shaanxi and Guangdong), and became the superior of the mission there [ first ] , [ 2 ] .  He knew the persecution of 1805, 1811 and 1818 there, then he was arrested the June 6, 1819 , near Nan-Yang-Fou, and imprisoned. Several times tortured, he is finally sentenced to death by strangulation. He is executed on the night of 17 at February 18, 1820 , in Ou-Tchang-Fou [ first ] , and dies the February 18 [ 3 ] .
