The palm game is located n O 1 rue du Jeu de Paume, in the heart of the Saint-Louis district, in Versailles (Yvelines). It is famous for the oath of the palm game lent by deputies of the third state on June 20, 1789. This room, which was called at the time “Tripot”, was built by Nicolas Creté in 1686. King Louis XIV, as well as other characters from the Court, played the game of palm, very popular game at the time and ancestor of current tennis. There were several rooms like this in Paris; Roturiers could not participate. Oath of the Tennis Court in Versailles the June 19, 1789 , engraving by Helman after C. Monnet (National Archives AE-II-3691). This room remained famous in the history of France for the oath pronounced there the June 20, 1789 by deputies of the third party and who will take the oath of the palm game. King Louis XVI wants to prevent a third state and its allies from the clergy and the nobility to meet again, because the Estates General are in the process of making a legal revolution. With the decision of June 17, to dissolve the orders and to create a national assembly, the king must resume the advantage and summons the three states for a royal session, on June 23 [ 2 ] . Under the pretext of decoration work, the Hôtel des Menus-Plaisirs is thus closed by the King, against the advice of his Minister Jacques Necker. The provisional president of the brand new National Assembly, Jean-Sylvain Bailly, appeared on the morning of June 20, in front of the room while a detachment of French guards prohibits access. In the street, the noise of a coup flows, the crowd is agitated and the deputies seek another place to continue their work. On the proposal of deputy Joseph Ignace Guillotin, they invest the game room, in the Saint-Louis district. It is a long building (29 × 10 m ) belonging to individuals. The walls are painted in black to help players better see the balls and the blue ceiling is dotted with lilk flowers. For any furniture we install a few seats and, as a table, a door on two barrels [ 3 ] . This scene was immortalized in 1791 by the great incomplete historic painting of the painter Jacques-Louis David, The Oath of the Tennis Court . The room became national in 1793. It was a moment to replace the game room with a commemorative monument during the Revolution. Place of memory of the French Revolution [ modifier | Modifier and code ] After the Empire and the Restoration, which transformed the victims of the Revolution into heroes and martyrs, the July monarchy is a moment of reconciliation of the nation with the Revolution of 1789, and the June 20, 1789 becomes an important date again. The plate placed on the room is restored and the painter Horace Vernet (1789-1863) received authorization to install his workshop there. The proclamation of the Second Republic, the February 25, 1848 , was a glorious resurrection for the room. A large civic banquet took place within its enclosure the 14 mars 1848 . The Second Empire was going to do what the restoration had dared to do: the room was strengthened to an official of the police headquarters who installed a tripot there for the guard officers. He went bankrupt, moreover, shortly after. The Palume Game room was abandoned under the Second Empire, before being transformed by the Republicans into a museum of the French Revolution in 1883, with the commemorations of the Centenary of the Revolution. In 1879, Edmond Guillaume the architect of Versailles and Trianon, undertook the restoration of the room to make it a place of memory [ 3 ] . He erected a Doric Edict supported by two columns, on his pediment is placed a Gallic rooster in gilded bronze, work of Auguste Cain. Under this edict, he places the marble statue [ 4 ] by Jean Sylvain Bailly (1736-1793), president of the third state and first to take the oath on June 20, 1789 [ 5 ] . Completing this scenographic immersion device, busts representing the main players of June 20 are aligned along the wall [ 6 ] . Around the room, on a frieze are painted the names of the oath signatories and on the back wall, the painter Luc-Olivier Merson achieved an interpretation of the unfinished painting by Jacques-Louis David, The Oath of the Tennis Court , in the original format based on the study of David’s wash [ 7 ] and the engraving of Jean-Pierre-Marie Jazet [ 8 ] . The June 20, 1883 , the museum is inaugurated by President Pierre Waldeck-Rousseau and the Minister of Instruction and Fine Arts, Jules Ferry [ 3 ] . The palm game room is classified as a historic monuments by decree of 22 mars 1848 [ 9 ] . This is the first place in France having been the subject of a protection decree, and it will remain the only one until 1886. Indeed, until this date the protection of monuments is only made by official lists , established by the Ministry of Education and Fine Arts [ 9 ] . Completely renovated in 1988 on the occasion of the celebrations of the bicentennial of the 1989 Revolution, the Palume Game Salle received President François Mitterrand to commemorate the heritage of Bailly and the spirit of 1789. Currently managed under the responsibility of the public establishment of the castle, the museum and the national domain of Versailles, it is open on a guided tour [ ten ] . ↑ Contact details found on Google Earth. ↑ ‘ History of the National Assembly » , on Assemblee-NATIONALE.FR (consulted the April 6, 2023 ) . ↑ A B and C [PDF] chateauversailles.fr . ↑ Work of the sculptor René de Saint-Marceaux. ↑ Georges Monmarché, Albert Dauzat and Marcel Monmarché, The surroundings of Paris , Hachette, 1921 , p. 68 . ↑ Clotilde Brégeau, The heritage of the Parliament Congress , Ed.
