Stade Rennais FC is also engaged in the Coupe de France. Maintained almost miraculously the previous season in Division 1 [ first ] , Stade Rennais approaches 1991-1992 with the ambition to renew its lease once again in the elite. Several major players in the workforce leave the Breton capital, at the forefront of which the Cameroonian striker François Omam-Biyik, but also Patrick Delamontagne who puts an end to his professional career and joins the Voltigeurs de Châteaubriant. To compensate for these departures, the Rennes leaders make a cosmopolitan recruitment to say the least: Baltazar, top scorer of the Primera División in 1988-1989 [ 2 ] , becomes the first Brazilian player to wear the red and black jersey [ first ] . Two Yugoslavs, Kujtim Shala and the experienced Bla Blaž Slišković accompany him, as well as the American Hendrig Gutierrez. To replace Pierrick Hiard, who integrates the technical staff [ 3 ] while remaining in the pro workforce [ 4 ] , Stade Rennais calls on Pascal Rousseau, who already has a solid experience of the high level [ 5 ] . The club also records the arrivals of Jacky Colin, who replaces Thierry Goudet, and a young Espoir of Lorient named Jocelyn Gourvennec. To supervise all these beautiful people, you need a coach. Raymond Keruzoré thanked, it is Didier Notheaux who takes control. Notheaux returns to Rennes, he who evolved there as a player in 1976-1977. The season starts badly for the Rennes, who concede four losses in a row and immediately sink into the relegation zone. It was not until mid-August to attend a first Rennes success, acquired before another candidate for maintenance, AS Nancy-Lorraine (3-1). On this occasion, Baltazar scores its third goal of the season, but this early efficiency will remain in trompe-l’oeil: as, moreover, the entire Rennes offensive sector, the Brazilian will remain particularly ineffective throughout the season. The end of the first leg allows the “red and black” to see an start to the upturn, three victories in a row allowing them to reach the fifteenth place in the classification on the evening of the nineteenth day [ 6 ] . But the start of the return matches is catastrophic: fourteen games without victory, including eight defeats, bring the Rennes falling back to nineteenth place, which would condemn them to a return to D2. In mid-December, they are victims of a curious affair, Baltazar and Shala having ingested high doses of sleeping pills before a trip to the Vélodrome stadium in Marseille [ 7 ] . Result: the second is forced to give way after half an hour of play, and the first will be guilty of no less than nine offside during the remaining time [ 7 ] . Despite the accusations of Christmas Le Graët, who insinuates that the Rennes players would have sought to win on the green carpet [ 7 ] , strong presumptions of cheating then focus on the Marseille club [ 7 ] . These will remain a dead letter, and the result of 1 goal at 5, acquired at halftime, will be ratified. The end of the season is a continual struggle between Stade Rennais and AS Cannes, which holds the place of barragist. From February to April, the two clubs engage in a chase, neither of them arriving at a distance. During the penultimate day, the Rennais obtained a decisive result by tearing a precious victory in Saint-Etienne (1-0) thanks to a goal from Thierry Turban in the last quarter of an hour. Thanks to this result, combined with a Cannes defeat in Marseille, the Rennes pass in front of the Azureans in the standings. Remains the last day. On their coubertin field, the Cannois are led at halftime, but manage to return to the score 83 It is Thanks … to François Omam-Biyik, the former idol of the Lorient road [ 8 ] . The Rennais, they keep the draw and virgin on their field against AJ Auxerre, but the former Brestois Corentin Martins opened the brand a few moments later ( 85 It is ). It remains only five minutes at the Rennais to save their place in D1 … And it is finally the young Laurent Huard who saves his training club by equalizing at the entrance to the stoppages. A goal synonymous with the dam for the Stade Rennais , and relegation to the AS Cannes of Zinédine Zidane, Luis Fernandez and Pierre Dréossi. There remain the dams for already miraculous Rennes, who find themselves facing determined Strasbourg. They failed twice in play-offs in 1990 and 1991, and in turn eliminated Le Mans and Angers. In the first leg, played in Brittany, the two teams fail to deciderate, and the Alsatians return with a good draw (0 – 0). The return match is played in an explosive atmosphere at La Meinau, arch-fashion for the occasion. From the fifth minute, Cobos, free from any marking following a Rennes defensive error, cheats Pascal Rousseau from the head. Far from resigning themselves, the Rennes equalize six minutes later, with a powerful and distant shot from Le Dizet, which virtually restores the maintenance to “red and black”. The Strasbourgers take a hit on the head, but in the twentieth minute, the Nigerian Stephen Keshi scores a sublime goal of the forty meters, restoring the advantage to Strasbourg. Worse, eight minutes later, a roundly conducted counterattack allows Jacky Paillard to widen the gap. This same paillard who, at the end of the match, drives the point home with a fourth goal, he who had been asked to leave Stade Rennais a year earlier. Severely beaten (1 – 4), Stade Rennais is again relegated to Division 2, two seasons after obtaining its climb. A new page turns.
