Premnotrypes voracious , called in Spanish White potato worm (white green of the potato), or Gorgojo de los Andes (Andes Charançon) is a kind of schoolboy insects, from the Curculionidae family, from South America. This pest of the potato, very present in the Andean regions, in particular in Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador [ first ] , is one of the species of the Andean Charançon complex of the potato [ 2 ] . The damage is mainly caused by the larvae which feed on tubers in the field and after harvest in the storage phase. The adult insect is more or less dark brown in color depending on the age and nature of the soil. It often merges with the color of the soil making its detection more difficult. It measures 5 to 7 mm long in 2 to 4 mm wide. Elytra are tough, striated and carry protuberances. Not having membranous wings, these insects do not fly and move exclusively by walking. They are able to travel a distance of up to 12 km in one night. The female differs from the male by its slightly larger size and a more rounded shape, it also bears a yellow line, absent in the male, marking the separation between the elytra. The larvae, of creamy white color, are apodes and arched in the shape of a C. The very differentiated head is coffee in color. They measure from 11 to 14 mm At the last larval stadium [ 3 ] . Eggs, 1.2 long mm approximately, are cylindrical-ovals and white to amber color depending on the maturation stage [ 4 ] . The biological cycle of Premnotrypes voracious may extend over a period of 95 to 280 days depending on the environmental conditions, in particular food availability and altitude [ 5 ] . Females lay their tiny eggs (0.5 mm of diameter) near potatoes, inside the dry stems of various plant species: wheat, barley, kikuyu (Pennisetum clandestine) or other grasses, as well as in potato residues, beans, vesces, or even directly on the ground. From their hatching, which normally corresponds to the start of the period of formation of the tubers, the larvae join the potato plants and enter the roots and then the tubers in which they dig galleries to eat. Their development includes five to six larval stages which take place in about 50 days. At the last larval stadium, the larvae leave the tubers to bury themselves at a depth of 15 to 25 cm . They form a cell in which they undergo nymphosis. This stage lasts from 20 to 30 days and expose the insect to various attacks, in particular parasitic mushrooms such as Beauveria bassiana . Adults rise to the surface and are looking for potatoes on which they eat and mate. These are insects with nocturnal mores, fleeing the light and hiding the light in dark and humid places, under plant residues or earth clods. Their lifespan, very variable, is around 30 days [ 6 ] . external links [ modifier | Modifier and code ] On other Wikimedia projects: Resources relating to living : Taxonomic references [ modifier | Modifier and code ] (in) Reference killed : site declared here unavailable on April 7, 2023 References [ modifier | Modifier and code ] ↑ (in) ‘ Andean potato weevil » , Pests and Diseases Image Library (PaDIL, Australian Biosecurity) (consulted the January 18, 2013 ) . ↑ (in) ‘ Taxonomy and Bionomics of the Andean Potato Weevil: Premnotrypes spp. and Related Genera » , International Center for Potato (consulted the January 18, 2013 ) . ↑ (is) Lucía Torres, Patricio Gallegos, Carmen Castillo et César Asaquibay, ‘ Manejo de gusano blanco» , International Potato Center, April 2011 (consulted the January 20, 2013 ) . ↑ (is) Francois Herrera , The White Pope worm.
