List of crossing points [ modifier | Modifier and code ] Before departure, nine compulsory crossing points (including seven “ice doors”) are fixed by the race management, in collaboration with competitors and local authorities. The Australian doors were placed at the request of Australia, frequently requested for the rescue of skippers [ 2 ] . An “ice door” is an arc connecting two points from the same parallel. Each competitor must be at one time or another north of this arc. After departure, for security reasons, the number and the position of the doors can be modified by the race management. However, a door is immobilized as soon as a boat crosses the previous one [ 2 ] . The boats of Vendée Globe 2012-2013 in Sables-d’Olonne before departure. The boats admitted to participate in this race are single-length monocco sailboats between 59 and 60 feet, that is to say about 18 meters. These boats must respond to the rules of the 60 -foot Imoca class. Each competitor has the right to board ten sails [ 8 ] , which he can combine as he pleases the different types: it is a strategic choice that can prove to be penalizing in certain circumstances [ 9 ] . Due to the reliability given by new materials and new manufacturing processes, it is no longer necessary to embark two mainsail [ ten ] . Qualification of competitors and boats [ modifier | Modifier and code ] Each skipper claiming to be an registration must have participated in the races defined below, and/or carry out a course on the boat which he will bar for the Vendée Globe 2012. Complaints can emanate from a competitor, the race management or the jury itself [ 30 ] . The five members of the jury, independent of the organizing committee and the racing committee, are appointed by the French Sailing Federation [ thirty first ] . These are : The French Bernard Bonneau and Georges Priol; the Spaniard Ana Sanchez; The Briton Trevor Lewis; The New Zealander Jack Lloyd [ 32 ] . Departure [ modifier | Modifier and code ] Part of the fleet on the day of departure. The November 10th , Bertrand de Broc damages his boat twenty-five minutes before departure, and must return to the pontoon. The departure is given to 13 h 2 , off Sables-d’Olonne by actor François Cluzet, who then turned Alone , where he plays the role of a solo browser participating in the Vendée Globe [ 33 ] . Five competitors “fly” the start and must turn around to return the starting line: Zbigniew Gutkowski, François Gabart, Vincent Riou, Kito de Pavant and Armel Le Cléac’h [ 34 ] . Marc Guillemot and Louis Burton take the best start. Atlantic descent [ modifier | Modifier and code ] At the score of 17 hours , Bernard Stamm leads, followed by Jean-Pierre Dick and Marc Guillemot [ 35 ] . After 4 hours and 43 minutes of racing, Guillemot loses his keel and abandons. At the score of 20 hours , François Gabart is in the lead. THE November 12th , de Broc is starting with almost thirteen hours late. The same day, Kito de Pavant collided with a trawler, and abandons. On the 14th, Burton collided with a trawler, and tries to regain the sands to repair. On the 15th, Samantha Davies unmolded and abandoned. THE November 16th , taken in an area of winds without consistency in the southwest of the Canary Islands, Gabart gives way to Le Le Cléac’h, shifted a little further west, where he benefits from stable winds [ 36 ] . On this date, the third is Bernard Stamm. Burton announces his abandonment. THE November 19th , Jérémie Beyou abandons (broken keel cylinder). On the 20th, the crossing of the black pot causes a spectacular tightening of the five pursuers of Le Cléac’h (Dick, Gabart, Stamm, Riou, Thomson), some of which sail. On the 21st, Zbigniew Gutkowski abandoned (automatic driver out of service). Riou, one of the favorites and one of the five pursuers of Le Cléac’h, abandons the November 25th (collision with a metal buoy). This is the seventh abandonment. The same day, due to the difficulties encountered in negotiating a particularly capricious Sainte-Hélène anticyclone, the group of five head boats is split: Le Cléac’h, still leader, chooses to cut the first door; while Dick (then 3 It is ) Takes the risk, arrived northwest of Trindade, to bypass the calm zone from the west to benefit from a flow which must come from South America. He is imitated the next day by Gabart ( 2 It is ). A west road is also chosen by a group of three pursuers (the cam 6 It is , Golding 7 It is and wavre 8 It is ); It allows them to pick up the five leaders. In the night of November 30th At first is December , up to the 40 It is parallel, the option is paid for Dick who takes the lead, not without establishing a distance record traveled in twenty-four hours. But it is not enough to dig the gap. The first five, which are now on the east, are grouped again: after three weeks of racing, the first (dick) only distances the fifth (Thomson) only a hundred miles [ 37 ] . The struggle is intense, and the leader continues to change for three days: Dick, then the Cléac’h, the first is December ; Dick, then Gabart, the 2 ; Dick, then Cléac’h, the 3 . The December 3 , To twelfth h 48 (French time), Cléac’h crosses the firstness of Cap de Bonne-Espérance [ 38 ] . At that time, he was followed by Dick, Gabart, Stamm and Thomson. Behind them, the “Trio of Quinquas” (Golding, Cam, Wavre) is late [ 39 ] . Further behind, Sansó is 9 It is , Boissières ten It is , Lamotte 11 It is , de broc twelfth It is ; Et Di Benedetto, 13 It is , closes the march, 2,129 miles from the leader. Crossing the Indian Ocean [ modifier | Modifier and code ] The passage from the second door of the ice, the Crozet door, to the longitude of Madagascar, gives rise to opposite strategies. An anticyclone is indeed occupying the entire width of the door. The oblique Cléac’h north ( December 5 ), crosses the door in its west end the next day. Strongly slowed down, he immediately descends south to look for the wind. Its four pursuers on the contrary draw a large edge to the south, bypass the anticyclone, then take to go back to the eastern end of the door, where they are slowed down in turn. At the whim of the poverty, the command changes several times: Gabart takes the lead December 6 , Tribe the 7 [ 40 ] , Gabart then le Cléac’h the 8th . But, once the five head boats have crossed the door and their group has reformed, the classification is the same as before the door: first is Cléac’h, 2 It is Gabart, 3 It is Dick, 4 It is Tribe, 5 It is Thomson ( December 9 , To 5 hours ). Cléac’h welcomes his option, which allowed him to “Grabs a few miles [ 41 ] » (his advance on Gabart is 16 miles December 5 , it reaches 55 miles on the 9th). But behind him, Gabart feels wings. THE December 10 , he established an impressive distance record traveled in 24 hours (22.27 nodes on average [ 42 ] ), and seizes the head. Le Cléac’h succeeds in taking it briefly ( the 10 , then the December 11 ). But it is finally Gabart who keeps command. The grip allows the first two to win their three pursuers somewhat. Dick ( 3 It is ) still succeeds in maintaining 85 miles. In this beginning of the long descent to the south, at sustained speed (the averages are more than 18 knots), the gap remains very tight between the two head boats, which are sometimes seen [ 43 ] . They narrowly escape an anticyclone who comes to settle in their wake and who, the evening of the December 12 , catches up with Dick. This loses more than a hundred miles in twenty-four hours. For their part, Thomson ( 4 It is ) and Stamm ( 5 It is ) Pay very dearly a slight delay caused by various damage: anticyclone now bars their road to the Australia West Porte [ 44 ] . On the evening of December 13 , the head duo seems to have made the break [ 45 ] : Dick is 185 miles from Gabart, still a leader; Thomson at 383 miles. Michel Desjoyeaux stresses that the first two were able to detach themselves thanks in particular to the damage which brake all their pursuers at this time-key [ forty six ] . The gaps only widen the next day, December 14 . AT 23 h 25 , Gabart crosses the firstness of Cap Leeuwin, in the southwest of Australia, first. At that time, Cléac’h is 30 miles, Dick at 362 miles, Thomson at 571 miles. Stamm is 5 It is , Le Cam 6 It is (at 1,349 miles from Gabart), Golding 7 It is , Wavre 8 It is , Sansó 9 It is , Boissières ten It is , de broc 11 It is , Lamotte twelfth It is , By Benedetto 13 It is (at 3,747 miles from Gabart). On the evening of December 15 , Dick accuses a 498 mile delay on Gabart; and Thomson, 823 miles. On the morning of December 18 , Cléac’h is in the lead [ 47 ] . AT 8 h 8 , he is the first to cross longitude 146 ° 55 and , which marks the entry into the peaceful ocean [ 48 ] . Pacific ocean crossing [ modifier | Modifier and code ] The next day, December 19 , Gabart takes over. The two boats are halfway through, and always sail a few miles from each other, sometimes on sight. THE December 20 In the morning, the Cléac’h leads; In the evening, it’s Gabart again. The 23 , Cléac’h led a few hours, before Gabart went before. The 25 , Le Cléac’h leads, then Gabart, then again Le Cléac’h. Stamm having released for repairs, he must give in his fifth place to the cam. The 26th , it is doubled by Golding and Wavre, which take the sixth and seventh places. The 27 , it is doubled by Sansó, now 8 It is ; And the 28 by Boissières, who passes 9 It is . He only resumes the race the 29 , in tenth place. Meanwhile, the two leaders are still sailing, no weather options are possible immediately. Gabart takes the lead December 29 , Le Cléac’h the 30 . But, in the night, this lofer more, while Gabart finds a good slide, takes the lead the 31 , and is built an advance of more than 20 miles [ 49 ] . The first is January 2013 , To 19 h 20 (French time), Gabart crossed the first Cape Horn. At that time, Cléac’h is 2 It is (24 miles), dick 3 It is (at 468 miles), Thomson 4 It is (at 928 miles), the cam 5 It is (at 2,092 miles), Golding 6 It is , Wavre 7 It is , Sansó 8 It is , Boissières 9 It is . Tribe, ten It is , has just been disqualified, but he has a delay to call. De Broc is 11 It is , Lamotte twelfth It is Et Di Benedetto 13 It is , at 5,19 of the first. The Cléac’h doubles Cape Horn to 20 h 35 , or 1:15 a.m. after François Gabart [ 50 ] . Ascent of the Atlantic and arrival [ modifier | Modifier and code ] The January 2 , at the end of the Strait of the Mayor, the Cléac’h returns “Within 10 miles” de Gabart. His Gennaker broken breaking, sailing rises along the cable, he cannot roll it [ 51 ] . He must repair two hours during, night ( “François, he had not waited for me. Maybe that’s where the race was played [ 41 ] . » ) He still loses a few miles by struggling to extricate from an anticyclone [ 51 ] . The January 3 , south-east of the Malouine Islands, the gap between the first two is around forty miles. Their roads separate. They both opt for a trajectory east of the direct road, but Gabart does not want “Play too close to the small depressions that are constantly created and leave Cabo Frio [ 52 ] » . He prefers to get around the front winds to keep speed [ 53 ] . He therefore begins a fairly wide detour from the East. The Cléac’h chooses to attack. As his boat seems to go a little slower than Macif In the conditions that Gabart will meet, he wants to take advantage of the succession of small depressions that the weather announces to touch the alizés first [ 53 ] . He therefore cuts some 120 miles west of Gabart [ 54 ] . Far behind, in the Pacific, Stamm is in the race until further order, having appealed. He doubles Boissières. The day after, January 4 , he doubles Sansó. He now points to eighth place. The 6 , Boissières delights ninth place in Sansó. The ascent of the Atlantic turns out to be painful and complicated for the Cléac’h, with often opposite, strong and unstable winds, a lot of thunderstorms and a very changing sea [ 55 ] . The January 4 , it is only 12 miles from Gabart. But the January 5 , he loses around thirty miles. And, on the night of 6 to 7, abused by the erroneous indications of the weather files, it is blocked in a small stormy depression with a front to be crossed [ 56 ] , [ 57 ] : “There was a passage from the front, I thought according to the weather files to be able to return to François […] thanks to a flow of northwest. Unfortunately, I do not know why, the wind remained very right, I did not understand well, suddenly I had to come back in the wrong direction, I pulled an edge to South America [ 58 ] . » Gabart, shifted in the east, managed to move away [ 59 ] . The case benefits him: he accentuates his advance of about fifteen miles, and he then benefits from a wind in the right direction, stronger, which allows him to accelerate – unlike Le Cléac’h [ 57 ] whose addition, the January 8 , is still increasing by 56 miles. Reaching that day the 35 It is parallel, the Cléac’h accuses 103 miles behind Gabart, which is the largest gap recorded between the two men from the Porte Crozet [ 60 ] . The Jean-Yves Bernot router recognizes that the choice of Le Cléac’h was his « unique chance » to take the advantage, but that “The grains did not appear where he was waiting for them, and especially not enough in number. Suddenly, stuck on his way, he became dependent on the weather system in which he was [ 53 ] . » The January 9 , Tribe ( 8 It is ) abandoned. The trajectory of Le Cléac’h approaches that of Gabart but, the January 10 , the latter touches the trade winds earlier, and with a better angle than its pursuer. For his part, Thomson ( 4 It is ), which counted 988 miles behind the leader nine days earlier, profit from the winds with a more direct road, very west of those of the first three. THE January 10 , he seized third place to the detriment of Dick and, the next day, he returned to 295 miles from Gabart. But it is in an unfavorable position when tackling the alizés of the South Atlantic. The same day, he must in turn face opposite winds. He lost 200 miles in thirty-six hours. THE January 12 , Dick resumes third place. The January 13 , when he cuts the ten It is South parallel, Gabart dug the gap: the Cléac’h is 263 miles (he has just lost 180 miles in three days), Dick at 674 miles and Thomson at 784 miles. However, at the rear, a struggle for seventh place opposes a sansó-Boissières-Wavre trio spread over three different roads: the January 14 , Sansó takes the best by doubling Boissières (now 9 It is ) and wavre (now 8 It is ). For its part, Golding (in the East) is competing in fifth place at the CAM (closer to the Brazilian coast): the January 15 , he briefly seizes [ sixty one ] . Gabart crosses equatorial calm more difficult than Cléac’h, which benefits from a less active black pot [ 62 ] . Macif begins to slow down from the January 14 , At 4 It is parallel South: to go back from this latitude to 6 It is parallel North (exit from the pot to black), it takes about 2 days and 11 hours; must have Popular bank Some 8 hours less. THE January 17 , By Benedetto, twelfth It is And last, double Cape Horn: all competitors are in the Atlantic [ 63 ] . The Cléac’h is now counting on the anticyclone of Azores “To try something [ sixty four ] » . The January 19 , up to the Cape Verde archipelago, its delay on Gabart is 140 miles. But no weather option arises. The first four have no choice but to follow all four the same path: bypassing the anticyclone from the west [ 65 ] . In the southern hemisphere, Golding is still in the fight with the cam, dispossessing a moment of fifth place, while Wavre takes up the seventh in Sansó [ 65 ] . The 20th In the morning, Gabart leads 153 miles, then, approaching anticyclone, begins to concede ground. The 21 , Golding briefly seizes fifth place. In the night, Dick ( 3 It is ) Loses his keel. On the 22nd, Golding and the Cam continue to exchange fifth place. On the 23rd, Boissières took eighth place in Sansó. Gabart is hardly penalized by his bypass of the anticyclone: the door opens ” more than planned [ 49 ] » . He keeps an advance (in distance to the goal) which, depending on the poverty, varies from 84 to 118 miles. On the 24th, the two boats cross the Azores archipelago and gain speed. In the evening, their gap is a hundred miles. The January 25 , Dick (still in the race and always 3 It is ) Caps to the east to stay south of the Azores. Thomson ( 4 It is ) confers to watch over him during the announced passage of a front [ 66 ] . On the 26th, they sail not far from each other, exchanging third place. The winds blow up to thirty knots. Then the conditions improve [ sixty seven ] . Dick confirms to Thomson that things are better for him [ 68 ] . Its average speed on the theoretical course of 24,394 miles, is 13.01 knots (the reference average on the entire course was that of Michel Desjoyeaux in the edition of the Vendée Globe 2008-2009: 12.07 knots, For comparison, after 78 days of racing, Michel Desjoyeaux was only approaching the acres in 2009 and Vincent Riou had not yet doubled the Tropic of Cancer in 2005 [ 145 ] ). The equator journey time – Les Sables d’Olonne by François Gabart is 12 days, 1 hour, and 37 minutes [ 131 ] . This time is longer than that of Armel Le Cléac’h, 11 days, 13 hours, and 48 minutes [ 147 ] . Of the August 2011 , Gabart evokes a mysterious sail called “MDTK” with words [ 148 ] . In the Vendée Globe, when the December 10 He establishes a distance record traveled in twenty-four hours, many wonder: Gabart has a “Secret weapon” , a sail ” Magic ” , very efficient in the conditions where the record was broken? The first to wonder is obviously the Cléac’h: “I wanted to know for sailing. I suspected that there was something. I want to take twenty miles per day, but I want to know why [ 149 ] , [ 150 ] . » This sail would be the famous MDTK, “My magic sail, the MDTK” , as Desjoyeaux says (MD meaning Michel Desjoyeaux) by seeing Macif worldwide [ 151 ] . Desjoyeaux speaks of a sail which is an evolution of that which itself had in the previous Vendée Globe, a sail that the Cléac’h does not: “This sail works well in the conditions that François had when he broke the record of the twenty-four hours: 120 degrees of the wind, in 35 to 40 knots and good sea conditions [ 152 ] . » In an interview with Figaro , Michel Desjoyeaux adds that “This sort of bad weather tout […] also saves another sail which will be used two months later for the ascent of the Atlantic. When we see that Armel did not hold the pace under certain conditions, I think he is disabled at this level [ forty six ] . » Like a large number of offshore races, a number of significant events have confirmed that solidarity at sea still exists on the oceans: Kito de Pavant, having abandoned following a collision, proposed to Marc Guillemot, in a keel damage, to take his to resume the start. It could not be done because of the deadlines [ 153 ] , [ 154 ] ; During the disqualification of Bernard Stamm, due to an assistance made in spite of himself, all of the skippers who have been joined signed a petition asking the jury to rectify his decision [ 155 ] , [ 156 ] ; At the announcement of Jean-Pierre Dick of the breakup of his keel, Bernard Stamm, disqualified for assistance, then supplied in fuel at Cape Horn, indicates that he is out of race, and although far behind Dick, ready Assist in the event of a shipwreck [ 157 ] ; the January 25 [ 158 ] , Alex Thomson announces that he has confused to cover Jean-Pierre Dick, who will face bad weather [ 66 ] . When calm returns, the two boats separate, and Thomson will soon replace Dick in third place. This one, to thank him, sends him a photo where it is written: ‘ Alex take care of the third » ( “Alex, take care of this third place” ). For the public, the long and terrible duel delivered by François Gabart and Armel Le Cléac’h is the striking fact of the seventh edition of the Vendée Globe [ 159 ] . François Gabart: “What we can remember – I’m happy and I’m proud of it, because we are responsible for it with Armel – is that we talked about the Vendée Globe for the adventure, but also For the sports component, for competition. And we didn’t talk about the Vendée Globe for dramas. There was Javier’s captingage, it is true that it could have ended badly, but it went well, because today we have progressed a lot on the safety of boats and guys […] We take less risks for our lives today by taking the start of a Vendée Globe [ 160 ] . » Armel le Cléac’h: “It was an intense Globian Vendée. This intensity, I experienced it from start to finish because I was part of the duel. But I think everyone has experienced this intensity, these difficulties on water [ 161 ] . » Denis Horeau, director of the race, is happy to see 55% of the boats on arrival, while in 2008 there were only 37%. He also believes that “The notion of sporting adventurer, if it is always significant and always there because it constitutes the event, gives more importance to the sporting side on this Vendée Globe. »» A fleet of twenty boats seems to him “Name d’Or” : “It is a perfect balance, in terms of competitors, the organizer and the media. Everyone has much better visibility with twenty competitors, instead of thirty. »» He observes that “The vast majority of boats were very prepared” . He is delighted that the edition has been spared by “Brutal weather conditions” and what no competitor has “Never been in a survival situation” [ 162 ] . As in the previous edition, an online race is organized by Virtual Regatta simultaneously with the real. More than 470,000 sailboats participate [ 163 ] . She is marked by a bug November 14th [ 164 ] .The January 24 2013, almost 4 days before Gabart, the competitor Llyl crosses the finish line in the lead, having completed the course in 74 days, 16 hours and 59 minutes [ 165 ] .
