9 It is an animated film from 2009 directed by Shane Acker, based on the 2005 short film of the same name. The film is produced by Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov.

In a post-apocalyptic world, completely in ruins and lifeless, a small piece doll identified by the number 9 marked on the back, awakens in an abandoned laboratory, belonging to a scientist who lies dead in the room. 9 ventures into the now devastated city, bringing with him a talisman found in the laboratory, and meets another doll like him, 2: an old and fragile inventor that gives him a vocal box. The two, however, are attacked by a ferocious machine with feline features: the beast-day, which kidnaps 2. 9, wounded, loses the senses and subsequently awakens in an abandoned sanctuary, where 5, engineer with one eye and apprentice of 2 , it will borrow it. Soon 9 knows the other dolls that inhabit the sanctuary, starting with dogmatic leader 1, his massive bodyguard 8, and 6, a kind of mentally unstable oracle that spends the days to draw strange symbols.

1 says that when he and the other dolls woke up, a fierce war had broken out between man and an army of machines; The latter used special chemical weapons to eliminate any form of life on earth (including bacteria). Since then the dolls have hidden in the sanctuary safe from the beast-day, the last car still alive. To learn that 2 was captured by the beast, 1 does not seem worried at all and declares that he is now dead. 9 But remember that you have seen the beast-save bring 2 to an abandoned factory and convince 5 to follow him until there. Having reached the factory 9 and 5 they manage to find 2 but are attacked by the beast-day, which however is killed by another doll who turns out to be 7, the only female of the group.

Intrigued, 9 finds a compartment that seems made on purpose to accommodate the talisman found in his awakening and inserts it; 2 tries to stop him but the talisman absorbs his soul and activates the machine to which 9 hooked it, a gigantic robot called the manufacturer of machines (or more simply the car). 9, 7 and 5 manage to escape from the factory and take refuge in a ruined library, where 7 had hidden together with 3 and 4, twins scholars and silent. These show the origins of the machine manufacturer to 9. It is fed by an autonomous robot, called the brain and was built, on the order of a dictator of the nation, so that he would make robots and war machinery, who later, at the behest of the brain that controlled them all, turned against the humanity causing their extermination. 9 asks 3 and 4 if they know something about the talisman, but they can’t help him; 5, however, known how the symbols depicted on it resemble those that 6 is used to draw.

9 and 5 then return to the sanctuary to examine the drawings of 6, which actually reproduce the symbols of the talisman (identified by him as “the source”), but are discovered by 8 that brings them from 1. In the meantime the machine manufacturer starts To build new automators starting with the winged beast, a sort of mechanical pterodattilo, which is sent to look for the other dolls. The winged beast attacks the sanctuary and tries to kill 1, injuring 7, as soon as he came to help, but is finally defeated by 8; In the clash, however, the winged beast hit a brazier, which causes the church fire. 9 and all the other dolls therefore meet in the library where 3 and 4 have discovered something new on the talisman. It seems that it is a tool related to alchemy with which it is possible to give life to inanimate objects (just like dolls).

1, however, does not believe in all this and accuses 9 of being too curious and thirsty for answers like 2; 9 Then he realizes that 1 had commissioned 2 to explore outside specifically to send him to die. 1 He justifies himself by saying he sacrificed him for the good of others, then 7, for anger, tries to attack him, but 9 stops her and she runs away. In the meantime, the machine manufacturer has built many other machines: spiderbots, small robotic spiders, and the seekers, spies similar to hot air balloons; Subsequently, he knew the death of the winged beast, the car, furious begins to build another beast or the seamstress: a sort of fabric snake equipped with needles and wires with which to trap the dolls in his body, using the corpse of 2 as a hypnotic call. The seamstress attacks the library and capture 8, and then 7 who, however, manages to detach the corpse of 2. 9 from the car then bury the body of 2 and then heads to the factory to save 7 and 8.

In the factory, the seamstress delivers 8 to the manufacturer of machines that absorbs its soul; 9 But he manages to deceive the seamstress with a puppet similar to him, in doing so he destroys the car and saves 7. While 9 and 7 flee together from the factory, the other dolls, at the suggestion of 5, push a full barrel inside of petrol, thus exploding the whole factory. Having apparently defeated the car, the dolls celebrate for the victory, dancing on the music of an old gramophone that reproduces the song Over the Rainbow ; But while 5 runs behind another vinyl record, approaching the rubble of the factory, discovers that the manufacturer is actually still alive. 5 He tries to warn his companions, who immediately begin to escape but the car manages to catch him, sucking his soul. While the dolls flee the car on a bridge also 6 which, before being killed, says he “returns to the room of the start where he will reveal the source”.

9, seeing how the car sucked the souls of the dolls understands that his friends are still alive inside the brain, and decides to find a way to free them before trying to destroy it. Following the words of 6, 9 returns to the scientist laboratory, where it was created; Here the doll finds a holographic message in the hand of the scientist. In it the scientist explains that he was the one who created the brain, to which he gave life with the talisman, but his dictator did not agree to use it for scientific purposes, preferring to enslave him as a manufacturer of machines, which led the brain to rebel, exterminating The Humans. The scientist then reveals that the nine dolls were created through parts of their soul, making it the only hope for humanity, and finally shows the sequence of keys to 9 to open the talisman, which 9 understands can be used against the machine To free souls.

9 thus meets with the other dolls, and explains his plan to sacrifice himself to remove the talisman from the machine. However, 1, decides to sacrifice themselves instead of 9 and is absorbed, allowing 9 to remove the talisman, destroying the machine manufacturer. That evening 9, 7, 3 and 4 free the souls of 1, 2, 5, 6 and 8, who fly to the sky, from which it begins to rain; 7 question to 9 what they will do now, and he replies that what matters is that the world is now a safe place and it is up to them, the latest representatives of humanity, the task of preserving it. In the meantime, small phosphorescent microorganisms, bacteria similar to bacteria are shown on the rain drops: a sign that life on the planet has started again.
