Šempeter-Vrtojba (an Italy: San Pietro-Vertoiba ) is a commune created in 1998 and located in the traditional coastal region in Slovenia, just on the Italian border.
The town is located in western Slovenia, on the border with Italy in the region called Slovenian coast (Goriška). The neighboring Italian city is Gorizia.
Until the end of the First World War, the locality was incorporated into the District of Goritz (Gorizia) within the county of Gorizia and Gradisca and the Austrian coast. It was one of four different states in less than 100 years: first of all the Austro-Hungarian Empire until 1918, then of Veneto Julienne within the Kingdom of Italy until 1946, of the Federative Republic Socialist from Yugoslavia until 1991, and finally the Republic of Slovenia to the present day.
